The Dover Harbour Board flag was flying on the seafront for several weeks until a few days ago when the Union Jack was hoisted again. It goes to show that the Port and Harbour are owned by DHB and will be forever British!
Some fought gallantly to keep Dover Harbour and Port forever British. I can say: "I was there, and campaigned to keep our Port and Harbour forever British".

The Port is a functional asset with employee expenses and maintenance expenses attached to it, including a new terminal.
It should reap enough income to cover these expenses plus a revenue for the local authorities and for the national Treasury.
The more traffic transiting through it, the more profit it should make.
Anything other than this is abnormal and senseless and has naught to do with economy.
This was my campaign and will remain so until it happens.

i thought the bone of contention was that d.h.b. are not allowed to spend on local community things under their charter?

Alexander in previous posts(and still appears to saying)
the local authorities should have a say in the running and be part of the running of the DHB and the port
I disagree

no doubt they will be pleased but the big problem to overcome is a change in trust port rules so that they can engage more with the town.

Positive for Dover, Martin - The Minister is, from the statement, clearly taking a personal part in ensuring that ALL are properly empowered and involved in delivering a brighter better future for Dover.
"Mr Hammond said:
I am keen that Dover Harbour Board builds on the foundations put in place over recent months, and ensures the port's position as a significant part of our transport infrastructure, both now and in the future.
There is more to be done to ensure that one of the UK's major ports realises all possibilities of regeneration for the town and citizens of Dover. I intend to make sure that this happens, and that all parties are properly involved to achieve what we all want - a thriving Dover.
The minister plans to visit Dover later this year, to see first hand what has worked well since his last visit to the port in January, and to understand what more might be achieved.
He intends to hold discussions with interested parties, to inform ongoing work on how government, the port, its users, and the local community can best interact for the benefit of all."
The use of the personal pronoun is important, very important, for Dover and delivering what we all need. It means that the Minister himself will be ensuring that the DHB do not merely engage in another tick box exercise but that together with other parties a new and lasting relationship between the port and town is established and delivered.

I view the Minister's direct and personal involvement as good news for Dover and Dovorians.
