bus passenger journeys have been rising steadily over the last decade or so and show no signs of abating, just a glance at pencester road or folkestone bus station shows that. you have to fight your way through crowds to find your bus stop in canterbury bus station .

Why "Oh dear Roger", Keith ?
I have never seen a bus full to over-flowing, but then I don't go to bus-stations in Folkestone or Canterbury.
I'm not arguing that some buses are empty or full, just that I've not seen a full one.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

since free passes came in many people decide to leave their cars at home and go into town for lunch that may include a glass of beer or wine. many during the summer months go out in small groups on the bus that runs along the coast to lydd/hastings getting off at various places for a coffee or lunch, not cost them a penny in petrol or parking.

We go to Edinburgh regularly, single journey £1.30 anywhere (and it's a big anywhere), unlimited day ticket £3.50, and a deliberate policy to restrict parking in the city centre so it's hardly worth bothering to try to take a car in.
But if you want to see how not to reintroduce trams then theirs is a perfect example.
Our bus passes don't work

i thought that our bus passes covered us all over mainland britain, maybe we should give the scots their independence if they are going to be difficult.

Howard, I think they originally did as I recall someone travelling from Lands End to John o Groats, but not any longer.
From KCC website -
When you can use your pass
•Between 9.30am and 11.00pm Monday to Friday
•All day at weekends and bank holidays
Where you can use your pass
•On local bus services in England.
•On the Gravesend to Tilbury ferry.
•On the Maidstone Park and Ride and Canterbury Park and Ride services

Sorry Vic, things move on in threads just like they do in a normal conversation.
