There was a totally different atmosphere at Samphire Hoe, which was a terrific event hosted by Eurotunnel for their staff and families, and local contacts and volunteers (about 1200 altogether).
Free event, free transport from Farthingloe or free car parking if you were disabled or part of the event, free first slice of cake and glass of Kent bubbly, there was (shock horror

) a beer tent with local real ales and nobody got arrested, non-MacDonalds chips at the burger van, entertainment provided by local acts including schools and a cadet band, and a great relaxed time was had by all in a venue that is far more of a security target than Dover seafront.
Local girl Kyanna Hayes (find her on YouTube) opening the entertainment with some great pop songs and original compositions.
and the torch bearer Linda Klavina from Latvia being filmed by Meridian.
"Linda is a 13 year old Latvian girl from SOS Children's village where she lives in foster family and continues to surprise everybody with her talent for sports. She started to train in long and medium distance running only three years ago and now through hard work she has managed to be one of the leading athletes in her age group in Latvia - and she continues to pave her way to become a professional athlete. Linda is very competitive and she always takes place on pedestal in all local championships. Her biggest achievement is bronze medal that she won in this year's national winter championship. Besides sports Linda plays flute in music school and trains in national folk-dances while helping her foster family to take care of other 6 children who live with them. People who know Linda are happy to know her as true example of fact that unconquerable will and strongly determined goal can bring the best results."
Totally different to the sponsor dominated event on the seafront and what the Olympic spirit should be about, real people pulling together not corporate domination.
