If the fire alarms go off in the Gateway tomorrow night, residents will need an event ticket to get to the assembly area.

re #103, Samphire Hoe is closed to the public tomorrow, don't go there to get a sneak preview as you will be turned away.

Today's torch runners included 34 Germans according to Meridian News, while I am not racist surely it should have been carried by deserving local people?

PaullyB ,
Area to the right of the stage is the disabled persons enclosure, wheelcahirs etc.
The Dover event is the biggest in activities & coverage in the South East.
Hope local people make it a good day out & enjoy it.

Thanks for that info above there Paul, they will certainly get a good view from that position.
Yes with regard to the size ..the rolling bandwagon of it all has expanded hugely this morning. The BBC are here, Coca Cola( you better not drink anything else!), four Starcruiser Coaches, Olympic banners, further tented village springing up on the main concourse across from the Marina Hotel, there looks to be a big screen as well, and of course endless trucks and staff and security. Also emergency vehicles, police and a group of ambulances and so on. The barriers have proliferated further in big style and you cant move about...so it is certainly a big big production!
here is a pic taken right now...because its a wide angle view it doesnt tell the full impact of it all somehow...but yes its all happening. Exciting times!

I too would like to wish all of Dover the very best for the 'celebrations' laid on for later today.
P.S.
I hope I am not speaking out of turn or spilling the beans in any way, but the torch (or one very similar to it) will be here, across the street from where I sit, later in the week. I cannot be more precise because the whole thing seems mightily hush-hush. I'll stick my neck out though and say Saturday, but don't quote me.
The was to be an event, but a mixture (in the literal sense) of heavy rain and over-flowing Porto-Loos has rendered this unlikely.

Looks like being a fantastic evening. BBC TV and Radio are covering the area all day as are ITV. This is the biggest event in Dover ever so we should do ourselves proud.
Retailers and traders in the town, especially those around the Market Square, have an opportunity to expose themselves to the 20,000+ crowd expected at the event and I'd like to believe they'll all stay open late and promote themselves and Dover to all.
The people that have made the event possible should be applauded for their efforts.

I hope it's better than Hastings looked last night on the news. Polly Evans looked frozen and bored even though she tried to be enthusiastic. They had barriers up at the Stade to contain the crowds but there were only a few hundred people if that watching Rizzle Kicks. I think Drizzle Kicks would be more apt with the weather. Even the torch looked disappointing. Fingers crossed Dover can pull something great out of the bag.
I think we are all guinea pigs in the middle of an experiment for which they have forgotten to set up a control group!

The fireworks display is taking place right across the harbour, taking in the Castle also I believe. A few tests were set off last night and they alone were quite spectacular.

I seem to remember reading they are using the Admiralty Lookout for the fireworks, but I don't know where I read it.
"Song for Dover is a specially commissioned fire show with five choreographed boats in the harbour, and Dover Castle and the Prince of Wales pier acting as firing sites for the spectacular fireworks that will fill the skies of Dover to celebrate this once in a lifetime event."

" once in a lifetime event" ??
So 'they' have no intention of allowing anybody to enjoy such a thing again?
