It's a known fact that half way through the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon retired to his tent and then reappeared half an hour later wearing his brown corduroys.

Ray, I would say it was down to both as the producer should have questioned the spelling.
Either way it is a total embarrassment for the town, how long before the media pick it up and make Dover a laughing stock.
I hope we get a replacement correctly spelt memorial as soon as possible.

Not like me, I know, but I have stuck my oar in. In that I have emailed the fellow in overall charge of all things Monument.
They seem to have been so over the moon about the commencement of work on this too..

Google's response:

Nice pictures Scotchie well done with those. Yes it is a shame about the spelling mistakes. I've added a pic to the frontpage and added the timings as shown earlier in this thread by Howard. I didnt mention the spelling mistakes on there though as keeping it very formal as it were.

Absolutely appalling that a monument can be produced with the spelling errors that this one has and nobody noticed! spelling in general is worse now than it was years ago and I wonder if in the future monuments public notices etc will be in text speak

I have had a response to my email, the salient points are these...
"...this is a public event, of course there will be a secure ticketed area due to the nature of the senior military personnel attending and for the safety of the public with a guard and band marching along with other platoons of standards, cadets and veterans. The seafront will not be closed at all just a short area of Marine Parade. There will displays of full scale replica aircraft, vintage military vehicles and costumed re-enactors plus a display by the Army. We hope the residents of Dover will come and enjoy this free event, and support the memory of these heroes. The flypast of the Spitfire is timed for 1400 to commence proceedings and the flypast of the Swordfish is timed for 1430 to bring proceedings to a close. Once the parade has dispersed the displays will remain for public viewing."
In addition: Yes the errors have been recognised and those responsible have undertaken to correct them. The correction is said to take place prior to the event.
This has come to us from: Malcolm C Godfrey, Vice Chairman/Secretary, Channel Dash Memorial Trust.
I feel pressed to reinforce the 'public', 'commemorative' and entertainment aspects of what is promised to be a thoroughly enjoyable day and a fitting tribute to those to whom we all owe so much.

The stone masons have arrived by the memorial just a few moments ago..some afficials appear to be there too and all with a look of ermm.. concern. Looks like they are about to try and fix it.

Yes, all at 'Channel Dash Memorial Trust', are pained, to say the least. I thought it best to stick to the points of particular interest to local people. Suffice to say: If the swords were not for ceremonial use only heads would most definitely be rolling.

Good lord - how on earth could a Memorial progress to installation without a basic spell check? This is quite shockingly bad, at least four errors. Amazed it hasn't got a smiley face with a 'thumbs-up' and a 'LOL' inscribed on it.

It may be that the gravest error, once the mistakes had been recognised, was to leave it open to public scrutiny prior to rectification?
Anyway, I am sure nobody could conceive that those concerned could be anything but apoplectic at the least deviation from all things, "Ship-shape and Bristol fashion."

information has come my way in the last few minutes that explains the problem with the memorial.
an order was placed on the 8th of august with a company in china to build, do the inscriptions and ship it to the u.k.
to have it done in the u.k. it would have cost £.2.50 per word.
the designer from maidstone who also done the one in ramsgate has been down today and has stressed that all the corrections wil be completed by tomorrow.
