Dover will be centre stage this coming Saturday (22 September) for the unveiling of the new 'Channel Dash' memorial on Marine Parade. HMS Kent and the First Sea Lord will be in town, along with the RAF Band. The memorial is being unveiled at 2pm with a guard of honour from HMS Kent. There is also a flypast by a Swordfish and Spitfire.

According to the planning application, Brian, it will be situated alongside the existing Merchant Navy and Norwegian Navy memorials. Should be quite an event.

still worth going for the fly pasts though.

The Channel Dash featured on the BBC's "Coast"programme about a year ago, angled around an interview with a veteran Austrian sailor from one of the German ships.
Did I mention I was the interpreter for the programme?

Yes I think I remember that Andrew..I think we had some pictures didnt we. Well done with that.
There is a new plinth. It has been laid recently, so I assume thats the one that will be used. It is about 30/40 feet to the east of the Norwegian memorial garden which in turn is 30/40 feet to the east of the Merchant Navy memorial statue. I havent heard anything official but I reckon that will be the location. very central.

I was asked to make sure the the Miners Statue was moved and that the plinth was restored, due to this new 'Channel Dash' memorial being sited there by March 2010.
A fitting replacement I thought but it seems it is still going to remain empty?

The 2010 planning application showed it on the site of the miner, but in 2011 and then 2012 it changed to Marine Gardens...

A bit of activity today..not much. But cones have been placed along the road adjacent to the new plinth (see also post 9 ) to the east of the Norwegian Garden and Merchant Navy Statue. Bit of a clue there...
Also have had a press release today in direct from the Royal Navy themselves. Very grateful to them. HMS Kent is coming...I will get the full monty up on the frontpage tomorrow all being well. Havent looked at it in detail yet.

Good to have the full info there lads...have now put the Royal Navy press release plus on the frontpage, many thanks to them once again, and have linked it through to this thread. Many readers will be looking in I'm sure.
See the striking picture of HMS Kent entering Portsmouth harbour.
Looks like this is going to be bigger event than I myself initially anticipated.
