Tories put David Cameron on notice after Eastleigh byelection drubbing
Large group of MPs plan to call for leadership contest if this month's budget and May's local elections go poorly

David Cameron has been put on notice by anxious Tory MPs to improve his party's fortunes in this month's budget and the May
local elections or risk a leadership challenge, after they suffered the humiliation of being beaten into third place by Ukip in the
Eastleigh byelection.

Eastleigh is hardly a problem for Dave as he has an easy out in the shape of the Australian guy brought in to run the Tory's General Election campaign who played no part in the by-election.
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

While you are right, Keith, that the Tories are in a state of shock, Farage may be sorry that he didn't stand at Eastleigh, because if he had, he may well now be sitting in Parliament.
Instead he's on the sidelines as per usual.

Cameron dismisses the Eastleigh result at his peril. Too many of his own party are, in his own words, "closet racists" for the Tories to carry on as they are at the moment. He can promise a referendum in x number of years for as long as he likes, but unless the agenda is tackled sooner rather than later, there will be more results like Eastleigh to come, and probably worse.
I genuinely fail to understand what his problem is: if he were to hold this much-vaunted EU referendum in the summer rather than some years in the future, he would blow UKIP out of the water, literally overnight. Win or lose the result, UKIP would have no leg to stand on, so the disenchanted Tory supporters would either rejoin the ranks or go further right-wing and vote BNP. I can't see the latter happening, so I see it as Cameron's chance to reunite his party.
True friends stab you in the front.

The problem with Nigel Farage, he's going for the Euro-elections in about 2 years time, Howard.
If he went for an all-out campaign to get an early EU referendum, the chances are UKIP would swing the vote in their own favour at one by-election.
Then they could conduct an outright campaign for "referendum now!" within the Parliament and possibly create a rupture in the Tory party.
But Farage does not know when to send in the cavalry at the decisive moment. He's riding two different horses in one, going for the EU election and at the same time claiming to want an EU referendum.
The majority of people in Britain are so desperate to leave the EU, many would vote Tory as long as Cameron promises an EU ref. But if a GE came tomorrow (literally), Labour would be back in owing to a split vote.
