sounds like john o'farrell, cannot be serious for too long. a bit i remember from his book was when he was delivering election leaflets and he got a very long letter from someone who was unhappy that the leaflet was not put through his letterbox properly and half of it was showing outside. our hero sat down and wrote an even longer letter apologising profusely over the incident then went round and stuck it halfway through his letterbox.

Another quote from his book - "In October, 1984, when the Brighton bomb went off, I felt a surge of excitement at the nearness of Margaret Thatcher's demise. And yet disappointment that such a chance had been missed."
A response from
Norman Tebbit - "I do not know to what extent his disappointment that Sinn/FeinIRA failed to kill the Prime Minister was eased by the deaths of five other people or the injuries incurred by John Wakeham and my wife."
Sounds like a lovely chap.

"All the main candidates in the Eastleigh by-election were dealing with their own personal crises today, after they were taken to task for comments on housing, private school and killing Margaret Thatcher. "

Tory no-show: Eastleigh candidate backs out of debate
" The Tories' candidate in Eastleigh did not attend a live hustings debate today, in a move interpreted as an attempt by the party machinery to hide her away.
Maria Hutchings did not attend the BBC Radio 5 Live debate between the candidates, even though a consensus is emerging that the Liberal Democrats are taking the lead.
"The Tory candidate is clearly running scared," Liberal Democrat president Tim Farron said. ..."
" Members of the audience expressed anger at Hutchings failure to appear:-
"I'm very disappointed. I've got lots of questions about small businesses in Eastleigh that are closing down, we want to know the policies," one audience member said.
Another said: "I am very disappointed and angry she won't be able to answer specific questions about Hamble [a local town]."
A third member of the audience said: "I'm disappointed Maria not here because I wanted to quiz her on how good local secondary schools are." "

seems the blues chose the wrong candidate in the first place, she has strong right wing views in a constituency that was held by the most left wing party.

Now, now Howard. A chap's got to do what a chap's got to do. This lady has suffered for the cause over the years. Fighting election after election on behalf of the Conservative Party. Perhaps this was her reward, a 'winnable' seat close to home. We can only guess at the paroxysms of joy that swept her household upon hearing the news.

#14 And the reason the Conservative candidate did not appear was known to the BBC.
It just happens that David Cameron was in the constituency to support her campaign & the BBC still went ahead knowing her unavailiability.
No bias there of course.

The Eastleigh by-election is going to be another vote of confidence - as those that preceded it - in Parliament and the parties putting forward a candidate.
Watch the turnout.
If the majority of constituents don't vote, as so often happens, then once again Parliament has received a vote of no-confidence, and indeed all parties that contended the vote.
Watch this space...
