Perhaps not as different as all that, Howard. Beppe Grillo was a comedian who mutated into a serious politician. Our very own Boris is moulded from the same clay and who would question that he would equally be outstandingly successful in this country if he were to start his own party?

Ed(other UKIP supporters) tonight UKIP has to do more than just well if its to be respected as an alternative to the big 2 or the lib dems.
There only ambition at the mo is to damage the blues which they probably will
unless they do better than that they will always be seen as a one person one policy protest party

As you keep saying, Keith. It is in the interests of the old parties to paint them as a protest party only looking to take votes from one or the other. Hopefully the voters of Eastleigh will see through this and not be deceived by this plaintive squealing from the vested interests of the old parties.

i must admit that if the unthinkable happens tonight and ukip get there first honourable member i will be delighted, if nothing else the major parties might have to start listening to the people.

Ed;
unless UKIP has a breakthrough(predicted by no one)
they will only ever be regarded as a one person, one policy party

Yes Keith, as you have helpfully pointed out on so very many times before. It is something that the diehard supporters of the old parties devoutly wish to be the case. Hopefully the voters of Eastleigh will have a more balanced and informed approach to the subject but I doubt it.

If the Greens can get an elected MP I am sure there is a possibility UKIP can, whether they can hold the seat at the next General Election is a different matter.

Keith, I don't think you should say no-one predicts a breakthrough for UKIP, some commentators have been saying they could pull off a surprise.
It's very much like the recent DTC by-election, the incumbents didn't want an election (still whinging about it in the Dover Express this week!) as they thought they were certain to win anyway, but the result from an independent with little help nearly proved otherwise.

Political parties will lose the by-election. Watch the turnout result.

With the turnout at 52.8%, it would appear that political parties.com narrowly won the Eastleigh by-election.
However, we must still see how many votes were not valid, as some of the populace may have cast something other than a political party vote.
With the leaders of all four mainstream parties having personally participated in the Estleigh by-election, including personal appearances of the PM and other party leaders, and Nigel Farage's refusal to stand as UKIP candidate being the given reason why Marta Andreasen MEP defected to the Tories, an almost 50% no-political-party response from the electorate is impressive by all means.

Eric Lubbock (Liberal) won Orpington from the ruling Tories in 1962 in a by-election with a 24pct swing but it was another 48 years before they got their first Cabinet seat since 1911. So don't panic, Farage will not be PM any time soon.

I agree he won't Peter, but with UKIP pushing the Conservatives into third place (by over 1,000 votes) was quite some doing.
The major parties need to listen to the electorate and heed them too.

For me Nigel Farage when interviewed summed up the Conservatives quite nicely, too much emphasis on wind farms and gay marriage.
