08:5185773"Oh fiddledeee
its Uncle Vince for me"
This is what the Cameron's sang around the Christmas tree last night..they sang on in high tone gregarious merriment....
"lets bring Vince for tea
as he's so luverleeee"
Oh they have such jollity at the Camerons.
But seriously though, Vince Cable, the nations favourite politician supposedly, seriously rattled the Coalition government yesterday by shooting his gob off to two undercover reporters from the Daily Telegraph. Oooh that Daily Telegraph, scuppering MPs chances yet again..they are wicked are they not!?
The reporters pretended to be Libdems and as himself and Clegg are Libdems and riding two horses at the same time, not a comfortable experience, he told them what he thought any ol self respecting Libdem would want to hear.
"I will bring this government down if Im pushed too far"
He also said that David Cameron, not short of a bob or two himself, was considering scrapping the Winter Fuel Allowance for the old and elderly, even though Cameron pledged he would not do so during the Election campaign. Well we all know that these pledges turned out to be worthless.
This is a creaking embarassment for Vince Cable, to spill the beans in this way and be caught out. He also said the government is...
"paralysed by inaction because of the differences"
So there you have it, and you thought they were all pulling together very well and looking confident. Well no, a front for the cameras on one hand but behind the scenes the government is creaking, beleaguered with differences, and infighting on a grand scale.

09:0385774Its all about Cable's vanity, over-doing his own importance. I have always said that this over-rated spineless twerp was the weakest link. He should be sacked.
It doesnt actually tell you anything about the coalition, but a lot about Cable.

09:3085786i read that vince and nick had fallen out over the former planning to go on a special edition of "strictly come dancing".
looks like there is friction in the forced marriage.
they have to be all lovey dovey for the next 4 and a half years yet.

09:3485789I had to laugh - the postings between Brian and Barry seem a reflection of the relationship between Cable and Osbourne!!!!

here is a picture of the man himself..electioneering a while back..just uploaded this in case anyone of non political persuasion doesnt know what he looks like.
Brian I think you would need to expand as to why you think Osbornes is the weak link thats why you got that response from BarryW.
Howard depends on who you talk you re his dancing. Vince himself said on TV the other day that despite rumours to the contrary Nick Clegg was very supportive of his two step turkey trot!
Although whether thats the truth or not is anyones guess as none of these guys let the truth get in the way of a good TV interview.
"Dancing is my hobby" says Vince
"I sometimes work 18 hour days and I need some light relief"
How about giving him the sack then he wouldnt need to do the 18 hour days and he could dance off into the sunset to his hearts content. I agree with BarryW, there is an epidemic of people agreeing with BarryW, (we'll have to get t-shirts printed up 'I agree with BarryW!') Cable should be sacked.

Do you think DC will go as far as scrapping the Winter Fuel Allowance for the old and elderly?

10:4185806I don't think so, GaryC , I think that is more likely a red herring thrown into the discussion between Cable and his 'Libdem' interviewers.
I agree Cable should go. This is not the first time his unguarded comments have made him look stupid and embarrassed the Coalition. The fact that he claims to be able to bring the government down "if I'm pushed too far" is ammunition enough to sack him. Any Minster who thinks it's all about him is a dangerous loose cannon on deck and must be pushed overboard.

11:0285815Vince Cable seems to be his own worst enemy, I can't see him lasting in a position of relative power much longer.

11:0885816Brian - that is not a view of people in the know.
Peter is spot on. I do not think the Winter Fuel allowance should go and wont go, at least not yet. I do think that it should go, along with the joke of a Christmas bonus, in a big uprating of the State Pension as has been suggested. You may recall that a State Pension of £140 per week, linked to AEI, has been suggested based on UK residency, as part of an overall consolidation and simplification of state benefits.

11:1485817On Jan 1 my old boss Stephen Green, ex-HSBC chairman, becomes Lord Green and takes up the position of Trade Minister reporting to Cable. What an excellent replacement he would make. Believe it or not, he is not one of your city fat cats and his politics are well left of centre.

11:2985819The rather insulting Christmas bonus should go, it must cost more than £10 to administer. When introduced it was worth getting but not now, to save any backlash it could be tacked onto the fuel allowance.

11:3185820Brian - you need to read a bit more about what is happening out in the real world. Osborne has been earning a lot of respect in The City and in The Commons as Chancellor. He has been proved right as well in his economic thinking as well, judging from the reaction of the all important bond markets since the election.

11:3985824the problem for the coalition is that now vince has made his comment it is in the public domain.
we have seen a few pledges broken already, so that people will take it as read that dave is aiming for the winter fuel allowance.
