I have just been told about this new group on Facebook for those that are interested in getting the Union Flag flying BEHIND the Dover War Memorial that is just in front of the Dover Town Council offices.

With so much interest in the flag debate,I wonder how many people have visited the exhibitions in The Gateway Castle street or Dover Musuem. They tell the story of what it was like in Dover during the War years.

Hope that DTC and DDC have the street closure notices ready for Remembrance Sunday - there should be about 4500 people in attendance at the Dover War Memorial this year.

Too right Terry. The faithful turn up every year.I have always attended the River service however the past three years have had to go elsewhere.I doubt if these 4000 have stood as you have all weathers .
I'm off to County Hall shortly for the Launch of the Poppy appeal.

It's very sad that people look in at this forum and then go on another forum to trade insults.I only state where going when I think it maybe of interest .I would have thought the launch of the Poppy appeal would be relevant to the flag saga.
How very very sad people insulting me whom I've known for years. They seem to be under the impression the more events I go to I claim more expensesHow wrong could they be

We usually have around 150 people at the Eythorne memorial. I don't get down to the Dover memorial on Remembrance Sunday morning as Eythorne Silver Band always provides the music at the Eythorne service and I'm normally doing the Last Post and Reveille either side of the Act of Remembrance.

I admit I have never attended the service at the Memorial, I watch the Cenotaph service on TV and have done for as long as I can remember.

The following is an extract from:-
http://www.royal.gov.uk/MonarchUK/Symbols/UnionJack.aspx
'The flying of the Union Flag on public buildings is decided by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport at The Queen's command.
The Union Flag is flown on Government buildings on days marking the birthdays of members of the Royal Family, Commonwealth Day, Coronation Day, The Queen's official birthday, Remembrance Day and on the days of the State Opening and prorogation of Parliament.'
.....it's sad that the union flag is thought to 'spoil the view' on a day that we remember those who died in defence of our freedom. I hope that those who might say, "my Daddy never came home" will be allowed to carry a flag, if they so wish.
Do nothing and nothing happens.

I think the Mayor might have metaphorically shot herself in the foot with her comments.

Not so sure on this one, Bob's link suggests to me that the Town council and/or the public have no say over when a union flag is raised - a government department decides on behalf of Her Majesty.

I've just been reading the article about the memorial in the Autumn 2013 issue of Dover Life.
It has a photo of the unveiling of the memorial by Sir Roger Keys in 1924 - not a flag of any type in sight.

Like Ray,I researched about the Dover War Memorial. It is very unusual. It depicts how the youth of our country died that we might be free .He holds a cross on high .which is a very important feature. We have all seen flags flying and on windy days they twist and twirl..On a wet day they look awfull.
The names on the memorial are the most important.
The union flag now has to fly each day on the Town Hall.Sadly flag or not we can remember each day the sacrifice made and surely we should learn to live at peace with one another.Their legacy should be Peace .Trading insults is not the way.

I must disagree with Sue, the national flag of the UK never looks awful even when wet unless it is old and tattered, while the cross is only important if you are a Christian.
The Memorial as a whole means a great deal to me and to many from anywhere in the world simply for what it represents......a reminder of so very many lost lives servicemen and civilian in every conflict.

The mayor and her family clearly unhappy about the vitriol aimed at them on social media.
