Rippers clearly does not pay heed to the main forum as the "Double Postings" thread might provide a revelation.

Well for some this is good news,,,,,,,
I have decided to trial out posting so here goes
of course if it gets to personal I will stay away
So lets move to the recent bye elections;
There were no surprizes in Castle so I wish the new conservative well.
In Town and pier we saw the 2 horse race with John Heron coming out on top
John has Dover at heart, it will now be will his party hold him back(I hope not) I do wish John well and I'm looking forward to that pint!!
Then to the Maxton, Elms vale and priory ward
To me this was an interesting one, with the UKIP member standing as an Indy
The conservative although living in the ward, I hadn't really heard of her up to the count
Then we have the Labour party who chose to stand someone so far from the ward.
It took me a long time to decide what to do, having had many discussions with Labour guys it was clear even though there was an active local person, Mrs Stephenson was to be the candidate.
So after much thought I threw my hat in the ring, and what a healthy campaign it was.
We didn't get to hear from the (UKIP)Independent so we may never know what this lady could have done.
The conservative leafleted in the last week so targeted areas and so wouldn't have reached all the ward. but we did have an interesting chat at the count, and have had further chats since the count)
Then we had labour(bearing in mind they were fighting 3 bye elections) spent most of the time in the ward, heavy leafleting/canvassing, and for a Town council bye election it was really surprizing to see the party manning both polling booths. they threw everything except the kitchen sink at the ward.
Having started as a community representative just to shake up the political parties, it became clear as I canvassed locals, that people had lost faith in most labour councillors, and were urging me to win.
I then was really taken by surprize when conservatives/ex lib dems/and UKIP started to support some even doing my leaflets and posters in windows.
At the count chatting with the conservative once it was clear the winner I did say to her that theres a good chance she could pip labour which she did.
A clear message has been sent out.
Its really now down to the labour party to heed it
If they continue to take people for granted they will have more disasters on the horizon.
but that's for them to sort.
I'm thankful for the 4 candidates giving very different ideals and giving local people choice.
Keith

Welcome back Keith firstly I would refer to the low turnout as Rippers pointed out, no surprise that apathy usually wins most Town/Parish elections. I like to keep my ear to the ground in my part of the ward and converse mainly with people who do vote and also show an interest things. We have the vibrant Community Centre, the refurbished tram shelter, the bus route and major issues like Westmount and the missing play area.
The leaflet from Labour said that they saved the 68 bus route which made many people laugh as they all knew that it was the much maligned Gordon Cowan that did all the behind the scenes work and managed to manipulate KCC and Stagecoach to send top people to a public meeting where they were clearly shocked at the numbers attending and the strength of feeling. A few people have said to me that they are not political but they vote for whoever they see in the ward or are known to be active.
Lessons learned by Labour? No if they can't take the hint over the referendum then they never will.

True to form the local Labour party have posted photos on social media of John and Peter in the stockslast Saturday but fail to mention that 3 other councillors, one a community representative, one each from UKIP and the Tories had done the same. All rather sad that they use a Kelly Turner fundraising event to score political points.

Hi Howard,
you should know me by now and I would never be a party to anything in that regards. This was a community collaboration and it was not just about the councillors that were in the photographs and all the ones I have seen it has been myself,Keith,Ben and Peter .The Kelly Turner Fund raising appeal should have no political angle in anyway shape or form.We are engaging in something far more important than politics here.We need to all work together to try and achieve the end goal.Race, creed, colour, party allegiance are as nothing, the only way we can achieve this is by all of us pulling together to try and make this happen. If I do find that there is any truth to the allegation that the party I represent is trying to make capital from this situation I would walk away in an instant.

John I am not suggesting for one minute that you and Peter were there for any other reason than fund raising, unfortunately the anonymous individual that does the Dover and Deal Facebook page seems to think that last Saturday was a vote winning opportunity. I have just looked again and nothing has changed, I would urge others here to look at it and give their views.

I've just looked and can't see it as overtly political, poor account of the event definately.
More down to the refusal of the local labour party to admit that anyone else does anything for Dover!

Thanks John all removed now, best to put it down to youthful exuberance from someone not experienced enough to know that not everything is party politics.
