I'm surprised not to see the Saudis pulling out the stops on the humanitarian side. As part of their long-term aim to rid the world of Assad, they could do worse than making friends of those displaced by him.

That's a tough one Peter, estimates of 1m displaced people/refugees, the population of a large UK city. Just how does anybody shelter and feed those people for an unknown timescale? And if Assad is replaced will they be welcome back or want to return.
All humanitarian efforts are well intentioned but they require as much planning as military action.

David
we all have a problem here as to what to do,
on the one hand we have the issue of chemical weapons being used, and can this just be allowed to happen, and if allowed how may this escalate in the future?
and then theres the view of by even targeted strikes may well make the situation worse, with Russia and China certainly making it clear the side they are on, and tensions certainly rising.
Obama looks like he will soon take military action, and this may well make the situation worse.
I think we cannot just turn our back on the innocent within Syria, and at the very least we should be looking at aid to Syria
oh some other way of helping the innocent within Syria

Keith, you waffle on as usual with a childlike overview of the situation. We all know what the problem is - what would you do to resolve it?
I refer to my earlier post, just say "I don't know"

#226: Many Syrians are well-educated and hard-working; they would be capable of helping and organising themselves given a bit of logistical help from the Western powers and a lot of money from the Saudis and Gulf Arabs.

To highlight Peter point...

Syria refugees top 2 million, says UN
Refugee agency special envoy Angelina Jolie says neighbouring country's 'could be brought to the
point of collapse' if situation continues
Angelina Jolie visits Syrian refugees in Turkey
Over 20,000 Syrian refugees have fled to Turkey
The UN refugee agency has said the number of refugees fleeing violence in Syria has now surpassed
two million, marking a civil war that shows no sign of relenting.
Antonio Guterres, the head of the Office for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, says Syria is
hemorrhaging an average of almost 5,000 citizens a day across its borders, many of them crossing
with little more than the clothes they are wearing.
The announcement comes as UN weapons inspectors continue to examine evidence and samples
taken from the Syrian capital of Damascus following a suspected chemical attack. The US put
the death toll following the attack as 1,429 dead, 426 of which are children.

I'm with Peter and his #219
"I would like to see Obama, Putin, Cameron and Hollande getting together with the Turks, Iraqis, Jordanians and Lebanese to develop an assistance plan for the innocent victims, not arguing over who is going to fire the first shot."
Let 'us' do the difficult thing, the positive thing. Let 'us' apply salve to the burning question, and not simply more fuel to the flame.
Alas, who is there in the Commons to counter the self-serving belligerence of the likes of Fox & Rifkind?
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

And all the while, the UNHCR worthies sit in their plush Geneva offices and prove once again that they are the world champion hand-wringers.

Reports from the Iraqi authorities in June and July '13 indicate Al Qaeda actually produce chemical weapons, as I've posted earlier in the thread.
From June 2013 is also the news that a Turkish special forces unit arrested Al Qaeda-affiliated Al Nusra members on the Turkish side of the border with Syria, finding them in possession of 2 kg of sarin.
7 June 2013
"Moscow has called on Turkey to provide more information about the reported seizure of the chemical agent sarin from militants detained on the border with Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday."
