Chemical attack near Damascus was 21 August 2013
This is something that needs investigating, as the sources referred to in the article are the Iraqi authorities. They specifically mention a plan by Jabat Al Nusra to commit a chemical attack in Syria.
Security forces have captured the remaining members of an al-Qaeda cell that manufactured sarin, mustard and nerve gases.
BAGHDAD - The Iraqi Defence Ministry announced July 28 the capture of three further members of a terrorist cell that was planning to launch attacks in Iraq and abroad using chemical weapons.
The arrests were made during a series of security operations in Baghdad and Anbar from July 4-9 conducted by army forces with assistance from the Iraqi Intelligence Service, the ministry said. Investigations following the June capture of five cell members and the seizure of chemicals and items used in the manufacture of chemical weapons pointed to the involvement of three additional al-Qaeda members, said Acting Minister of Defence Saadoun al-Dulaimi.
The three had helped the cell to procure and prepare chemical weapons by providing its members with financial assistance, a facility and a means of transportation, al-Dulaimi said. It was clear that the captured members had established links with other terrorist cells, he said, adding that the arrests came as a result of the work of the investigation team handling the case.
Iraqi ground forces commander Lt. Gen. Ali Ghaidan said al-Qaeda's use of chemical weapons "confirms the extent of horror of the terrorists' ideology, which seeks to target Iraqis with these malicious weapons."
Dual use chemicals, fertilisers and industrial liquids are subject to strict monitoring, he said, and the concerned government agencies deliver these items directly to users listed in the government's database.
The government database contains detailed information on those using these items and where they are being used, Ghaidan added.
Iraqi national security advisor Faleh al-Fayyadh said the army's intelligence service has formed a special cell to work alongside the Intelligence Service and the Interior Ministry's Intelligence Agency to investigate al-Qaeda's production and planned use of banned chemical and biological weapons.
Al-Fayyadh said further investigations revealed that plans were put in place for al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra to get access to those weapons and "further aggravate the tragedy of the Syrian people."
Iraqis welcome cell's dissolution
The Iraqi public welcomed the Defence Ministry's announcement of the cell's capture.
Sunni Fatwa Commission Chairman Sheikh Mahdi al-Sumaidaie described the operation as "a painful blow to the terrorists' heads" that "aborted their sinister dreams."
Terrorists "pay no attention to young or old, and their goal is to kill people," he said. "If those weapons were used, they would have caused fear and panic. I give my blessing to the operation, which I consider a good omen for new high-quality operations by the security forces."
Salaheddine University biology department head Rushdi Abdul Adheem al-Saeedi said al-Qaeda is trying to "launch its attacks with the least efforts and largest destructive results."
"The operation conducted by the security forces pleased the Iraqis in particular, especially after the appearance of the terrorists on television screens, handcuffed and revealing their crime," he said.
Baghdad engineer Nora Abdullah said the cell's capture "proves that Iraqis have no other option but to support the security forces against al-Qaeda," which is "trying to sow bloodshed and destruction in every inch of our country."
