what it says is that we prefer to do our voluntary work for a non profit making body.

Ditto
Been nice knowing you :)
Mr Matcham....with all due respect to your advancing years, and in the knowledge that you have all your fingers and toes in many, many pies within this district....
You are not entering into this debate with objective knowledge...otherwise you would understand what we are pointing out.....your posting actually is very rude....
Are you in charge with manning and staffing this hidious box? designed purely to advertise one business......do you work for
Mr Richard M?....Would you or Mr Richard M...be prepared to pay the minimum wage for sitting in this box....?
This box, as has been said many times, and I know, because of pertinant conversations with people, well, the one or two, who were paid a commission and extra for promoting the tours and boat trips etc...... at the end of this season in September they were all told they were no longer required...In fact, the nice Blonde lady, Dolcie, who really worked hard, promoting Mr Richard M's business was in tears....
To be honest, this awful box, has grieved me, because I feel Dover, and along its Sea Front, if Tourist Information is going to be presented properly, deserves better than this..
No-one does anything for nothing Mr Matcham...except for bone fide charities etc......this is why I say....JHG, Horace etc....are the correct people to give the impatial information regarding Dover, its surrounding areas etc. etc. They are in the position to do so....
You volunteered to sit in this box...and you did not do it...that is your problem.

There are lots of ways to promote Dover without resorting to sitting in that box Vic. Take the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership, volunteers promoting Dover and working for its environment, always a good laugh with decent people and certainly not controversial! I'd much rather go out and about with them for the day than taking up your box offer.
Besides, the tea and biscuits are nice. And free.
My community interests and volantary work are never for a buisiness and I dont feel the need to publicise or justify them or belittle those who dont share them on a public forum .

Vic,
I already do voluntary work but if I did not there is no way I would go and help in that box. It is a BUSINESS otherwise it would be a registered with the Charity Commission, it might have a few leaflets but so does a B&B if they want them.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Phil I would love to be with you up therei it is my kind of work.as you saw with the London Rd Forum.but I can no longer do it,if i get fit again I will be asking to join your group.
Mr Norman, I do not work for anyone and do not get any pay for anything I do, I have not seen Richard for many weeks now,I am not in the box as you call it,because my time is taken up at this time.
And for saying no-one does anything for nothing you must be looking at yourself because there is alot of us that do.And I do not think I am being rude,if it sounds that then I am sorry.Phil the Tea and Biscuits sound good to me.

Phil, it is just my legs Apart from that I feel great, even feel like geting in the ring again.

I still think....and personal prods are not where this thread should go....
This offensive box, and the remit under which it is there.....should not still be there for much longer....
It now remains to find out, how , when and where it can be removed
It is not a Charity, and as such should be accountable.....

One thing I agree with you Mr Norman is it should be accountable and must say at this time it is not,but I will try to open it up again as I said when I find the time to to that.

Well I don't know but am I the only one who considers the tourist information booth rather quite beautiful. It's a positive asset to the town. Many people use it and the design could not be bettered. I think it would be a good idea if two more were installed. One near the eastern arm and one in the middle of the prom roughly where the channel swimmers train.
Speaking of which isn't it about time the town of Dover at least welcomed these swimmers somehow instead of totally ignoring them?
For many years now these people have travelled halfway across the world in order to pit their wits with the twenty-one miles of briney only to find themselves with no welcoming committee whatsoever. It's all rather rude really.
Most other places would celebrate our position in this regard and lay on some sort of facility to assist them.
Not here though. They are merely consigned to changing on a litter and excrement filled beach on which to prepare their training schedule. If they want to shelter themselves from the wind they have a choice of a poorly designed metal sculpture with no windows and a bench. Some sort of art installation I'm told.
They can, however, watch the news on the giant telly if the sea is too rough.
Ahhh the giant telly eh? Dover's answer to regeneration on the cheap.

We did have it in the middle but we had to move it on orders from the D.H.B. after the public said it was in the wrong place. And it is where it is because that is where we was told to put it.

there were other suggestions as to where it should have been put that were impractical if not downright uncomfortable.

Hi all.
The booth has been open pretty much every day and staffed by generally one person. Last year when we started Dover Sea Safari, we questioned how biased it was towards one individual business owner. This year has been totally different and has been promoting all Dover has to offer
Shame it looks as it does!
On the topic of swimmers......they have the option of using our facilities within the Sea Sports Centre for only £1 a day. That includes hot showers, changing rooms and secure lockers
70% of the swimmers who use the western end of the beach use the Sea Sport Centre facilities with the trainers using our kayaks to train alongside the swimmer. This winter will see us launching a specific membership package for swimmers.
We actually have a famous marathon swimmer training in the harbour and using the facilities everyday for an upcoming challenge (shhh I didnt tell you that!!)
Having a blast while living the dream
