If he can afford to rent in London he can afford to drive to Canterbury W or Ramsgate and pick up the hi-speed service there.

Probably more suited for Deal and Sandwich commuters (1h 40min - 1h 30min) although some Dover commuters have been going via Ramsgate. Arguments about who will pay for fixing the line look set to continue for quite a while before any real work can be done. Add the problems with the roads into Dover and a worsening economy it could get interesting regarding DTIZ.

The pale blue double decker I caught this morning seemed to be leaking disle fume into the lower deck. I was siting in the rear half. I reported it to the driver but i would advise anyone affected by such things and using that vehicle to sit on the top deck or towards the front of the lower deck.
i am concened about the delays. I hope it does not drag on endlessly so that everyone becomes resigned to it and it becomes an excuse to close this most expensive stretch of track.
If it's being delayed by wrangling between power-crazed egotists that is unforgivable. Dover suffers enough from that mentality as it is.

Network Rail have been quiet lately and very little in the way of complaints on social media so maybe people are getting resigned it. The train company is getting a bashing too.

To be fair to Southeastern, generally the journey is acceptable - the bus leaves on time, the drivers tend to stick to the same route, the morning buses get to Folkestone with ample time to catch the connecting service, the majority of which are now running to time. the return journey works equally ok - it is weeks since a train was late enough to claim "delay repay" and other than some minor inconveniences due to the TAP the bus is ok, even if they are a little worse for wear.
There is little in the way of practical or sensible alternatives or options so we have all gritted our teeth, put on our stiff upper lip and got on with it - doesnt mean we like it, accept it or are happy with it.
As for the engineers I hear on the QT that they are examining the costs and time for two options - repair or complete rebuild. Our local MPs are making noises around preferring the former whereas every rail user I talk to wants the latter even though it will mean we are inconvenienced for longer.

Last Friday on the TV news our MP was saying that he was hoping for a quick fix to get the line open, and then carry out a more permanent repair after that.

Unfortunately there does seem a mentality in Dover that we must just get on with it and not complain too much. Unlike the rest of Kent who are lining up to take a swing at Southeastern. It's interesting that all the meetings with MP, rail operator and Network Rail have been held in Deal because they are shouting louder. As long as people are happy to use the buses there is no urgency and the long game of 'you have managed this long, lets just close it' solution will come to fruition.

Just because people in Dover are not making a public show does not for a minute mean that we are not lobbying our MP, Network Rail or Southeastern, the quiet subtle approach often garners better results, better quality information etc.
No one is happy with the situation but if you choose to have that view...it does sit nicely with the glass half view of many on here that its all over bar the shouting - the reality is a lot further from the truth.
But what do I know...

Speaking as a non rail user I would think that it would be better to do a proper rebuild despite the longer wait. A patch up job that only lasts a year or two would end up with the section of line closed permanently.

Interesting bit of history of the line unfortunately incomplete in places because of records not being very detailed.

Just looking at the state of the sea wall it was fairly obvious the work would take a long time.

The train operator has been told to expect at least 18 months before running services again but that obviously depends if the govt agree to the cost of the rebuild.
