Sorry, to much green space already given away for what has said to be to help Dover,
Connaught park should be just that, our park, used by thousands each year, rather than letting it go to decay we should be doing more to make it a more attractive place to welcome people

Howard #15, I too would like to know if there are safeguards in place against development at Connaught Park. I must say i do feel somewhat uneasy about it all and a housing development did cross my mind on numerous occasions as I watch it deteriorate week in week out. Looks very much to me like its deliberate and there is something afoot. It will be a crying shame if Dover lose this vast, once beautiful park, with some TLC it could be beautiful again.

Just being realistic Vic, but people complain when there are talks of building 'executive' housing on the Heights and Farthingloe - YES money does need to come in and need to encourage it rather than fight investments....
Been nice knowing you :)

different cases entirely paul, the heights are a massive area with fortifications involved meaning inward investment is the only way of saving it.
connaught park is just a standard park that can be found in any town and maintained at reasonable cost by a local authority without even needing volunteers.

Unfortunately the people you are talking about would also be looking out at Dover as it is today. Apart from getting a Richard Branson on the council and prepared to spend his own money you need to engender a pride in Dover that the late and unlamented Dover Pride never could. To do that you have to give the younger people in Dover a future they can see as being worthwhile spending in the town. A part of that would be affordable homes so that they can have roots and a knowledge that the town looks after its heritage and open spaces. As it stands now, apart from the excellent work of the WHPS, little can be seen on either front and house prices continue to creep up beyond levels anyone working in Dover can afford. Just as allotments should not be sold off nor should be our parks.

with regard to connaught the neglect has set in and im sure public pressure should housing be proposed would stop such a move
and with a few ex politicians the pressure would be to much and probably due to public pressure would do a u turn

Mr. Scotchie, from Connaught Park one can see the Western Heights.
Vic, are you planning to buy a house in Connaught Park for £700,000? I don't think anyone else in Dover has this sort of money, the vast majority of us will undoubtedly campaign to keep the park what it is: a green park.

Still no comment so far from DDC, I was hoping that our illustrious forum member, one, Mr Paul Watkins may be able to enlighten us
I see the Dover Mercury have ran the story in last Thursday's edition with quotes from some of us on here
Maybe in view of this, we may get some response yet from the District council. I do hope so

I had a reply from DDC and basically it is due to cost; costs have had to be reduced and so to achieve that, the contract for maintenance has been reduced, so the minimum gets done.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to discuss this with schools, where different schools take charge of different parts of the Park to cultivate and plant flowers etc. The Big Society in action.
Apparantly the money has been found to repair the pond, which is good news.

why was it such a secret that connaught park was being run down? ok we only found out the state because colette made an issue of it and now the "mercury" has run with it.
why couldn't ddc have simply said what was going on and invite community groups to get involved. the castle forum springs to mind and roger has mentioned schools.
to anyone looking on it looks like the idea is to deliberately run it down so that it is rarely used then sold off to developers.

we lose a beauty spot so that a bland housing estate can be built. nobody seriously thinks that people will shell out for luxury houses there.

Yes Vic, but closer to Sevenoaks.
I think Connaught Park is too well loved to be deserted, no matter how unkempt it gets. For some a bit of overgrowth will add to the charm, and it would certainly delight insects, butterflies etc.
And no Keith not a huge fan, but then saying that could get you banned. Watching to see how the changes work out.

The above post is rubbish,Dover has alot more going for it than Sevenoaks will ever have ,the sea for one,the Western hights,The port, the Castle and that is just for starts, sorry but some of you can not think outside the box and if Dover is to move upwards, that is what you have to do,"Think Outside the Box".Mr Mc Sweeney the kind of housing I am talking about are not build as,or in a housing estate.
