I heard the Judas tree had to be removed as it was strangling other plants and it is too costly to replace, hopefully in time another tree will be planted to replace it.

i think community payback could get involved with the park, they have done good work for the corn mill.

Thanks Barry W-S . I can assure you the Judas tree was in no way strangling other trees - have a look - its the 43rd photo down in the left column in the link below.

I wrote to Darran Solley who informed me it was he who " took the difficult decision to remove it" , Well I can tell you that it was not a difficult decision but just a very ignorant one and is totally in keeping with the poor standard of decision making from Mr.Solleys office that has seen so many good trees & shrubs & hedges destroyed over the last few years . These plants could have been rejuvenated with some skillful attention from knowledgeable gardeners at much less expense than grubbing out and replanting with all that entails with establishing new plantings - watering , weeding and endless maintenance until new plantings are able to look after themselves. But I forget , Mr.Solleys ideas of new planting are just to turf these areas that have been so degraded.
I just hope some of the enthusiasm for the park that I have read on this forum filters through to Mr.Solleys office and he receives some much needed guidance. N

In the dealings I have had with Darran, all his decisions have been well thought out and considered; don't know how he has upset you so much Nick.

The only thing I do not understand is who planted the Judas Tree there in the first place if it was such a bad situation for it.
I am a bit confused as to what tree/ shrub could be planted in it's place that will not also cause similar problems.

Firstly to Jan, I noticed on your posting #337 that you have a very special Birthday today, so Many Happy Returns Jan, hope you are having a lovely day
Yes Howard, I have had a number of meetings so far with Mr Solley about our Connaught Park planned works and like Roger, I have always found him to be very helpful indeed, with a Huge knowledge of all things horticultural and a real pleasure to deal with. As I have said before on here, he is supplying the plants for our planting in the park this coming June
I am currently pursuing the community payback scheme with regard to volunteers, also looking into the possibility of student volunteers ie Kent College etc.

Thank you Colette, I started the celebrations by getting a completely new hair style, that is something the men on here might not understand.

Happy birthday Jan. I hope you have a wonderful day.
P.S.
I'm fairly sure that my hair is having the time of it's life...wherever it is. (downwind somewhere?)

Brian, from Nick's link at #343...
It is the sixth last photograph in the list. If you scroll down to the bottom the Judas Tree is (possibly) at the top of your screen. Small with lots of purple blossom.

Lots of workmen in the park today. Did not have my phone again so could not take photos sorry! Just be warned if you have a dog there off the lead there lots of vehicles moving around. They move very slow so should not be too much of an issue. I'm happy to move out the way though as they are making fantastic progress. So nice to see it coming together, well done Collette
