00:1984299every day we drift a little closer to that dystopian nightmare imagined by Orwell
all in the name of security, the war on terror and law and order of course, because we must all be able to sleep safe in our beds without worrying our silly little heads about all those bogeymen out there

17:0084401Just as a point of interest, Peter Garstin asks whether I am, or was a communist, well the answer to both questions is no.
Even if I had or was a communist what of it?? Ted heath when he lived in Broadstairs had Hugh Scanlon as a neighbour, and despite there political differences were very good friends and neighbours.

19:5684444Absolutely Jimmy
I am not quite in the same league as Vic M for political allegiances but I will admit to having been a member of CPGB when a student, then joined the Labour Party, then sent my card back when Blair became leader and since then I subscribe to the Graucho Marx view of clubs when it comes to political parties.

20:4184460i can never understand when people with different political views cannot get along because of politics.
all parties change as society changes and they try to keep up with trends.
as a simplistic example, mr blair courted middle england to get the reds elected and ended 18 years of blue rule then spent the next decade mixing with big business and worldwide royalty.
now dave has clearly gone for the social conscience thing, every new policy helps the poor and leaves middle england picking up the bill to the chagrin of the party faithful.
i find it fascinating to watch.

22:1184501That is a very superfiscal view of political allegances Howard.
There are consistent strands running through the Conservative Party tradition going back to Peel and Disraeli, Tory and Conservative.
Major political parties that aspire to govern tend to be coalitions within themselves with each tradition having it's time to take the lead.
