20:3936427If your own voters and your own councillors can't make you see that this is morally wrong, Cllr Watkins, and you continue to ignore cries for sanity, you will deserve to lose the next election. It takes a peculiar talent to outdo Gordon Brown in the shooting-oneself-in-the-foot department, but I think you've just achieved it.
By the way, I live in Guston which makes you my local Councillor: chalk one less on your count next time round.
True friends stab you in the front.

20:4336430I don't realy care who made the deciosion but i do care toilets are being closed by the once fab guy on here Mr Collor.
We need answers now, and the sooner the better.
This is the true face of the conservative party, thanks Sue for giving us an insight into how your party works locally.
They don't believe in democracy
they don't care about public opinion
They make decisions behind closed doors.
Why would anyone want to vote conservative?
Well then charlie boy, whats your view on this??? wonder iof he's brave enough to say

20:4836431i do not think it is a party issue keith.
there was a public meeting over 7 years ago at the town hall, when the labour council were advocating closure of the fountain and also public conveniences as cost cutting measures.
i fully agree with your comments about decisions behind closed doors and indifference to public opinion.
you and roger have both advocated that we attend neighbourhood forums run by the district council.
most of us know that they are just an opportunity for DDC to appear to be listening, nothing ever comes from them.

20:5136433Howard , you make a good point, charge people for using them. Surely that is what we are trying to offer by asking the Towns/Parishes whether they want that charge to apply to their local people. If we charged for useage of individual toilets, their useage would not meet the costs of rates, cleaning, opening, closing etc. Add the costs of vandalism and we would be back next year posing the sames questions.
Each Town/Parish has had their debate in public. St Margate's called a meeting to discuss this with their residents and the residents told them unanimously to precept for the costs.
How each locality deals with their community for them is to decide.
As for constitutional local government decisiomaking, I suggest you address that to the higher body who imposed these systems on us.
Let pose the question , how many of you know where Buckland Bridge loo is [cllrs apart], let alone use it?

slight difference in thinking here, i would like to see the continental system come in, where clean towels are available and someone keeping an eye on things.
the stembrook bog for example is totally useless, full of social misfits, injecting, drinking or sleeping it off in there.
incidentally i do know where the buckland bridge one is, i just prefer to use the river instead.
finally paul, this debate could have been a lot less agressive and emotional if the question had been put on here by you or another cabinet member prior to closure.
we are all adults and realise that cuts have to be made sometimes, but when they are done so suddenly it makes people feel that they have no viewpoint to be heard.

21:0036440Thanks for the reply Paul, much appreciated. A bit of a conversation on these forums can work wonders! I am gratified that creativity is in your remit - I am very keen on a bit of creativity in government!! I still challenge though whether the issue is entirely for local resiedetns and council tax - granted the funding is rooted in local taxes, but as the impact is diverse I am convinced some budget sharing is possible.

21:0836444Bern surely that is the point, budget sharing with the Town Council was and still is the option. In other areas a contribution to all day pubs to use their facilities comes into play.

You are unlikely to get the reply, at the end of the day a decision has been made by one person behind closed and I thank Sue for bringing this to the forum.
Sharing the ways you work I dont disagree with, but in this case theres no sharing the toilets are closed for ever

21:1836449Well we can all see that Mr Watkins is not going to answer to my post.s. And to say that we can all walk in a all day pub just to use their facilities and not even get a drink is not on the landlords would not like it nor most of the public, I know they do it overseas in some parts. But I would feel out of place going in and just going to the looe and walking out again so that is a no to,just open up the looes again and make yourself look like the good guy.
