Martin P - You cannot say I am just taking the Conservative side 'by reflex' - I am a critic from the right and frequently say where Cameron and Osborne are going wrong - read the blog.

Howard - #62. Your tongue must have been very firmly fixed between your teeth while shaking with laughter when you wrote that. For once, Keith is partly right at least though he over-states the case regarding Osborne.
There is no magic bullet or person in a white hat that can 'save the economy' it is between a rock and a hard place with only a lot of tough and very unpopular decisions needing to be made.

Considered, Martin, very considered after years of experience from the 1970's and their support for militant trade unions and their fiscal and monetary incompetence and their 13 years of even worse fiscal incompetence and social mismanagement more recently. But, this is a good point, I do praise them for what they get right like the smoking ban and even Brown for keeping us out of the Euro. It is certainly not my fault that they don't get much right worth praise. As you can see I am quite prepared also to criticise the conservatives as well....

And that BarryW, is it in a nutshell.
For you, these cuts and the many more cuts that you want to introduce, have very little to do with our debt, it is mostly about tipping the scales back in your direction, while you still can.

No GaryC - the need for public spending cuts is purely economic. We and much of Europe, in fact, are in the mess we are in simply because of excessive government spending allied to too much taxation that together chokes the productive economy. When you spend more than your income you cut spending, simple. Of course it is more complex in the Eurozone because of the Euro adding to the lack of competitiveness of the weaker countries and limiting their ability to respond.

Some people need to get into the real world. I hope you do not manage your own finances in the way you seem to think the government should run its.
If you do, I met a good insolvency practitioner at a breakfast meeting today I can introduce you too.
