I am sure we are all re-assured by the news today that Uncle Vince, benign and gentle man of de people, always available for TV interviews, has issued the statement that he himself would
"make a good chancellor".
Vince of course used to be 'something in the city' so comes to the table with a 'wealth of experience'. However before we get toooo excited, the likelyhood of the Tories stepping to one side and letting Vince Cable be chancellor is as remote a possibilty as anyone could imagine. Hell would freeze over before the arch Tory backbenchers would surrender the chancellorship to a ghastly Glibdem.
So another idea goes begging.
Lord Oakeshott, who was also something in the city, a fund manager in fact, and I know a little about fund managers, has said that the current Chancellor is more than a tad useless...but not bad for a guy on "work experience". But now in the teeth of the current economic gale, in the teeth of the chill wind, we need someone substantial, not a boy who has never had a real job....went on Lord Oakeshott, who of course is another Libdem. So much for Coalition togetherness.
Oakeshott is a pleasant fellow, often on TV, much liked by producers for his outspokenness on the Coalition. But not terribly popular right now though in either number 10 or number 11 Downing St.
Vince smiles with mild embarassment as he is wont to do when hearing all this...
but would still love the job!
