If town councils could be run along non-political-party lines, then the same could also be said of district councils.

all very utopian alex we can only hope your wish comes true and we get people that genuinely want to make things better where they live rather than the party posturing.

I am proud to say that when I was elected to DDC the secretary of the local opposition party stated openly that she would vote for my personality and dedication to the community. Of all the votes I recieve I was most grateful for hers as it represented the reason I agreed to stand.

Agreed Keith, the trouble is that so many appear not to. Much like the House of Commons there are far too many people occupying unnecessary seats.

maybe some do work hard bur results do not suggest this to be the case.
if it wasn't for sylvie and her band of volunteers we would not have had any floral displays in town this year or last.

So often people can list all the reasons they cannot do something rather than finding the means to do it!

precisely lesley, that is why sylvie was forced to intervene last year, maybe someone of a similar calibre can open the sea front toilets and kiosk?
not really rocket science.

Yes Lesley we all have such stories
im sure I couldn't have got elected on labour support alone
the ward being very marginal
in fact some tories did tell me they voted for me purely on work in the community
but it is about working for the electorate
you were one of those lesley

It's a shame attendance records are not publicly published.
I only have to walk out of my door to see projects I worked on, not alone but with a wonderful bunch of villagers keen to achieve the impossible, and could not begin to count the man hours, blood, sweat and tears which were spent to achieve results.
Worth it? You bet it was!

You're beginning to sound like me Howard, I can think of several who see their role as a councillor simply to have their photo taken.
If their brains were half the size of their egos we wouldn't have a problem.

Yes Keith, there are, but some still achieve little. If I spend the morning digging a hole, and spend the afternoon filling it in again, I have worked as hard as those councillors and achieved an identical result.

Peter
That's rather harsh peter
Im sure as Lesley indicated there are a lot of unsung cllrs that go about there business achieving all the time
but don't go for mass publicity.
so you don't get to hear so much about them.
of course on the other side of the coin we have 2 councils to many and all national govts are doing as much as they can to limit councils powers and resources.

I think Peter's comment is entirely valid after all he did say it was only some that are useless.
There are certainly to many councils and definitely to many councillors.

It won't change though Jan because turkeys don't vote for Christmas, we have too many politicians at every level from Westminster down, 90% are a waste of space.
They are in recess at the moment - will anything change?
Nope, we'll all just go about our daily business without interfering, attention seeking politicians poking their noses in and telling us how to live our lives.
I admire Keith's audacity, for 25 years he had his snout in the trough at every level, now he's saying there are too many councils, he sounds like a bloke who's given up smoking and wants to preach how bad it is for you.
