Fear not my brethren! Its not the real one. The real one is quietly out grazing after a rumbustous career of bluster, blood and turmoil. But what I refer to here is a new movie about her very self...yes one speaks of course of Mrs Thatcher. If thats not enough to put the fear of Gawd into the populace at large I dont know what is. Lefties everywhere will be quaking in their shaking taiwanese boots...
But no need, its just a movie, but it may awaken grisly nightmares of the poll tax and the miners strike. The film is called The Iron Lady.
First here is a picture of the real Mrs T as shown on TV last night.
and now here is an image of the new one, in the shape of Meryl Streep.
The film opens in january I believe and some diehard Conservatives of the old school are disgusted by it already, even though presumably they havent seen it.
My own view is this...
"you turn around and watch it if you want to
but this scribbler is not for watching "

You had my hopes up there PaulB - Mrs T, back again to save the country from the latest ravages and incompetence of Labour would be just what we need, but alas, only a film.
Contrary to what you say I have heard a lot of praise about the film's depiction of Mrs T from supporters of her who have seen previews. There were concerns initially that an American leftie playing her would be a stitch-up but it seems those fears are groundless and Meryl Streep is now an admirer.
Here is a link to the film's trailer. It looks like a great film. We can all go along and relive those days when she thwarted and defeated the enemies of this country including the Labour Party, General Galterie and the Trade Unions. What a great lady she is and we so need her like again.

surprised by barry's remark about meryl streep, she is an actress first and foremost, i cannot see her having any say in the depiction or even wanting to.
people have played hitler, atilla the hun, mussolini etc now its mrs thatcher.

A lot of those that fought Hitler were Labour supporters, enemies of the country?

I think Barry was referring to the intellectuals of the Labour elite Martin, (including communist infiltrators like Jack Jones), not the hard-working rank and file whom I know he has great respect for. If so, I agree with him. If not, I agree with you.

Wading in with both size 8's, whatever I might feel about Thatcher (and please, don't ask or I will start to rant, not pretty) she was a significant part of the UKs history and deserves to be recognised as a part of our political jigsaw. This actually looks as if it has hit the spot.

Meryl Streep!?!?
I thought Alan Rickman would have been a far better choice.

My first thought when I read the title of this thread was, "I didn't know that she had died, and I missed the party".

Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.
