Watty - the public decide on reduced choices - not much of a decision.

The public still decide Bern, however disappointing we find it. The internet offers even more competition & more choice. Small retailers are on 'a hiding to nothing'. Small returns, high rents & business rates without economic viability.

Howard both the district cllrs at Whitfield have told not only me but the full parish council when I asked them at the last meeting that they do not support the new house,s etc at Whitfield,
What you are doing Mr Watkins is trying to get away from talking about the non-building of part of the town which we all need to see done in our life time .
I am sorry to say with the set up of the district council at this time ,we are not going to see anything done ,bar more fencing going around the town for years to come.

i see the usual stuff about town centres dying, nothing can be done etc.
this is simply not true with dover, we have a much higher proportion of units than many towns.
people complain about the type of outlets but this is governed by demographics.
the problem is the state of the streets and surrounds, anti social behaviour is accepted readily.
until the council and police agree to take action over bad behaviour then the town centre will remain an unattractive proposition for many.
It is decisions taken by local reps that have contributed to town centre decline anyway. Social engineering is always the way, whether it is local or national government, and no amount of talk about the Peoples Choice will mask that, or that fact that local retailers and businesses are getting a raw deal and reduced options for their longer term business planning because of the lack of proper information. Is there a hidden agenda?

Marek - DavidH has talked about this a couple of times in the past - dozens of area offices scattered all over the district were amalgamated into one site and saved ££££££ on running costs etc, and a site was available at Whitfield which is fairly central and suited the job perfectly.
Been nice knowing you :)

In reply to Paul aka Scotchie's #195 posting, re Burlington House:
"- The owner is making a killing on the masts - why would he want to lose the income !!"
So does that mean the DTIZ development is effectively being held to ransom by one person/organisation's greed?
I don't know who owns the Burlington House masts, and frankly I don't care, but this really isn't good enough. Poor old Dover deserves better!
Cheers all,
Andy

apparently the owners are not paying business rates, many of us wrote to h.m.r.c. asking them to address the situation.
i have not heard back, i don't believe anyone else has either.

I made an FoI request of the Valuation Office Agency and was told that rates were not being levied on the unoccupied parts of the building because it was unusable and therefore deemed to have been demolished. I have not investigated any further into this Kafka-esque situation.

And I was under the misaprehension that I was the only ''daft bugger'' on the DF. It's nice to know that I am in such excellent company

Still no progress.
Sorry to be a bore but seeing it everyday is depressing. My own little effort is to keep it in the minds of the powers that be, after all its taxpayer's money tied up here.
