My stance is straightforward Martin, the outgoing minister Liam Byrne said we'd run out of money, why is anyone surprised that most of us are feeling the pinch. If somebody, anybody, can wave a magic wand I'd be delighted
Incidentally, good win on saturday
It was a good win, I was worried when Lloris was not playing but Brad did us proud again. And keeping on the thread, well a little bit

Just a few ideas...
Tax rises for incomes over 100,000, stop fat cat bonuses across the board, increase the percentage the uttilities companies pay back to the government, reduce the civil servants in Westminster, instead of the empty rooms penalty only appliing to social housing make all businesses with empty rooms above the shop rent then out, this will increase their revenue /make their premises more secure and increase the footfall in our struggling high streets, That's a start.

All good ideas Lesley.
A shift to Land Value Taxation would sort a great many of these problems. Certainly as far as maximising the use of properties;above shops and the shops themselves. This too would go a long way to getting away from taxing income at all, a benefit made all the more palatable after the implementation of other ideas of yours.
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

Lesley - some of your ideas are ones that guarantee less income coming in to HMRC....We have appallingly high tax rates as it is let alone piling on more and losing even more tax revenue. Reducing civil servants is certainly one I agree with. Most of the rest cannot or will not work, but the most counter productive is what you say about tax.
If someone earns £100,000 in 2013/14 tax year they lose 38p for every £ of income up to £118,880, when it drops back to 42p rising to 47p at £150,000.
These penal tax rates are not raising extra money for HMRC, they are losing money. Yet you say raise them more!
If you earned £100,000 would you bother to work harder to earn more if you were only to benefit from 38p or less from every £ earned? Or would you bother to take the risk of investing in your business to increase your income or employ people if you are going to get penalised for it?
A lot of people make such judgments. Indeed many do so at the 40p threshold, including me, let alone the highest rates.
High tax rates do not mean more HMRC revenues. That is why Brown did not increase the 40p level during his 13 years as Chancellor and did so at the end as a political trap for the Conservatives to inherit.
Official HMRC figures shows such losses as does UK and overseas historical experience.
We need economic growth and higher tax revenues and not high tax rates.
If we want growth and more tax income then we need to reduce, not increase, taxes specially the high marginal rates.

barry,i must insist that you join ids on living on 53 quid a week,1 bed flat.and you would have to pay rent, council tax, water, sewage, gas eletric and buy food and cloathing out of princly sum of 53 quid a week.and no tapping into your debit/credit cards either.

Brian check your facts, nobody is expected pay rent and council tax out of £53pw or just over £200pm.
You do yourself no favours in making up such nonsense, it hardly helps your argument.

You come up with an alternative yet Keith?
Don't forget Liam Byrne said all the money had gone - are you suggesting we just keep printing more?

I eat very well but do not spend £53 a week but then I do not buy loads of preprepared meals which cost so much in comparison with making a meal from scratch.

I know that but you said it would be difficult to provide food for that amount and I know that for one person it should be easy.
