Pompous, IDS, never!?
A man that up until very recently had the index page of his website displaying a full figure oil painting of himself. In recent weeks this has been taken off the website along with most of the other content...I really can't think why?
As for fraudulent claim, we cannot forget about IDS' claim that he went to the prestigious Universita Di Perugia! When he didn't. And then of course Dunchurch College of Management, where he claimed to be educated; where in actual fact he merely attended a number of short courses. He would only need to speak to his mate Mr Gove to know that short courses mean nothing and should be long, rigorous and have a final exam.
So when Mr Duncan Smith talks about his hardships, leaching from his impoverished girlfriend (that's right isn't it?) I really can't help taking it with a pinch of salt.
Yes reform is needed, in any such complex system constant reform is needed. Our concern should be how reform effects people and I don't think we will really see the implications immediately. I can't stand the constant scaremongering from the Labour party, but find it equally absurd that the Conservatives seem so complacent that these changes will not have a detrimental effect on anyone. We also have to remember that such Conservative ideology predates our financial crisis...handy that.
Perhaps to get people back to work all we really need to be more creative with their CVs, after all it clearly worked for IDS.

Not my intention Keith.
Just pointing out that IDS is no better than many politicians, if anything he should be trusted less.
I'm sure both Barry and David would agree with this?

DT1 I agree entirely with your post, labour have made this into a tired old class war which resolves nothing. The silly thing is its likely in 2015 that the labour equivalent of IDS will be in a similar situation.
Debate must have a start point, to me that is:
Does the welfare bill need cutting?
Once thats agreed objectives can be set out. To me £53 pw is irrelevant, its just a nominal sum, IDS's background or circumstances are irrelevant too, there is not a politician in either cabinet that isn't comfortably off.

The £53 is only part of the story; you have to factor in the rent and council tax payments to
The true benefits payments are what are locking in the poor to the system
Minimum wage employment just doesn't cover the outgoings,
Wages are low because the country is awash with cheap labour from abroad destabilising the jobs market
The facts are people do survive on £53 because they have very little options.
Why would business pay a proper wages when the labour party and conservative have flooded the employment market with cheap low skilled workers?

"Does the welfare bill need cutting?"
-Just what are the areas of Welfare commonly lumped together when the 'gross' figures are banded about?
-What is 'need'?
-Why 'cutting' and not reallocating or realigning?
Why no straight push for job creation. Now, wouldn't that be a wondrous thing, reducing the Benefits bill by increasing the numbers in work?
Surely risking malnutrition to save pennies here might end up costing many Pounds elsewhere?

Perhaps you have answers rather pointless questions Tom.
We're £trillion in debt by the way.

Tom
Debt creating jobs when you have an endless supply of uncontrolled incoming workers
Will not even dent the problem
Remember the big borrowed squander of the Olympic that only pored UK government money in to the pockets of EU workers.

Correct Keith.
It is not govt responsibility to create jobs but to create the right environment for growth

OK Keith, it's the immigrants what done it.
Much of the money that went on the Olympics came from you and me by a different route, the Lottery Fund.
David, if the right environment for growth was created, would not jobs also be created?

BarryW wrote:There is nothing at all pompous about IDS. He knows what he is talking about far better than the champagne socialists who are attacking him. You are assuming that he wanted to ask for help from family and that he had savings Jan. You know what they say about ASSUME, it make an ASS of U and ME.
Well for me he comes across as pompous.
Maybe you should not ASSUME what I meant, I actually said "he could easily have used savings or help from his family" which is how we managed.

No mention of class David.
Remember what Barry says about assuming!

DT1 it was me that mentioned class. I'm sick of hearing about tory toffs and IDS's rich wife, I don't want to know about their status I want them to make good decisions and/or offer alternatives.
I see neither

So we can then agree that IDS isn't making good decisions then?

DT1 if I'm honest I don't know what decisions he's made. All I hear is people screaming about £53pw, its pathetic, which is my whole point.
The debate has been lost in name calling

In which case I respect your honesty and sentiment David.
