just looked at those photos again and am struck by how reckless phil was, note the distance he must be from his beer. some of the pubs i have been in if you do not have a tight grip on your glass expect it to go its own way.

Not really reckless Howard, the wide angle lens makes things look further away then they really are! Believe you me, my beer is always within reach!

taking a gamble here in my view, sky subscriptions for pubs are astronomical, i doubt they could squeeze enough people in to cover the costs.

Best of luck to them! At least they are giving things a go! The GL was once oneof the busiest pubs in Dover, maybe not everyones cup of tea but busy all the same, and it raised, via the winkle club several £1000's a year for local needs. Well done to the new owners and the very best of luck!

they will certainly need a lot of luck with this phil, the pub doesn't seem big enough to me to take the numbers that would pay for the sport, usually wetherspons have the space to draw in the large numbers of people to make it pay.

Sky charge by the rateable value of the pub so at least the Golden Lion will presumably be paying a lot less than the Eight Bells.
On the ferries, the crew have a choice of two types of contract based on hotels. One allows you to view Sky programmes in a communal area but not in the cabins, the other allows you to distribute the programmes to the cabins but not to a communal area.
Bit of a nonsense really as it the same people watching it whether they are in their cabins or in the communal areas. Different in a hotel where there will be lots of non residents passing through the bars and restaurants.

A sign of the times. Business rates and greedy freeholders are the main reason. Rateable value of the Golden Lion is £16,750. Owned by Admiral Taverns, one of the greediest pubcos (who went bust in 2009 and have been owned by Lloyds Bank from then until a year ago when they were sold to Cerberus, an American private equity group) it is no longer viable as a pub under pubco ownership. Bought at auction for the £120,000 the freehold is worth, a private owner-occupier might just be able to eke a living out of it as a free house but with a Wetherspoons within 3 minutes walk, I doubt it.

i think we were all surprised when it reopened, they have certainly made every effort with sky sports, various events and changing the beers regularly.
as peter says above the combination of rent, business rates and tough competition look to have done for it.
