01:1272540I admit I'm biased being a blue, but I watched Ed Milibands acceptance speech earlier, and the phrase "Couldn't run a whelk stall" sprung into my mind - where is his personality, his charisma, his passion. PMQs is going to be so boring.
And Keith, it's now 17 months since you started your prediction!

07:2772548Ray
there you go then a month passed alrady lol
time ruinning out.
lets quickly look at just one union
the RMT, bob crow the general secretary whom I know very well as i'v been on negotiating team's with him, is no more supportive of the Labour party as he is the tories, he dislikes them both, in fact he's a member of an ultra left party.
The RMT are also NOT affilliated to the labour party, havn't been for years.
Anyway like ray says 17 months, not long now hooray

07:5772553Well thank you Ross...... We will see but the vote was a close one and it was only the Unions that swung it, he does not have the conifdence of the MPs or individual members quite clearly. Even before his election the Labour Party were totally dependent upon the Unions to stave of bankruptsy.....

08:0772555Actually, overall, all the candidates had union support, and a lack of political support, effectively and to a slightly different degree. The wierd system of election with a sliding scale of losing skewed the proper analysis. And frankly whether it is the unions or the banks, any political party has its owners and its creditors.

09:3572565been listening to ed in the last hour, he made it quite clear that he is not in hock to the unions, bob crow was mentioned.
he mentioned that he expected maturity from the unions, sounds to me like he will not encourage any pointless militancy from them.

09:5072568You are taking what he says at face value Howard - not advisable...

09:5972572I can hardly believe you just said that!!!!! Two-faced value surely, after all, the man is a politician!

15:5272603Well I backed David, but I'm perfectly happy with the choice of Ed.
I don't know why I'm surprised at your comments, Barry, but after years of whinging about "spin" I imagined you'd be the last to indulge in it. How wrong I was!!
The idea that Ed doesn't have the backing of the MPs or members is ludicrous. Marek posted the results in full, so feel free to correct yourself! Ed is indeed to the left of David, but we're really splitting hairs here. Back to the 80s? You wish!! Both the Milibands were crucial to the New Labour project, as was Lord Kinnock who backed Ed to change the party once again.
I spoke to so many people during the election and it was clear that the Tories had more support than in any election I'd campaigned in before. But don't allow yourself that false sense of security. The Libs were in meltdown, but then the TV debates made them look credible. Many Libs feel totally betrayed by their party, and a good proportion of them have now joined Labour.
The momentum is shifting slowly back and if we can be neck-and-neck in the polls with a leaderless party, then just imagine how things might be in a few months time with an established leader and the cuts beginning to bite.
"They have forced us into these cuts" just won't wash.
Your one saving grace could be to attach some sort of cheeky gerrymander to the AV referendum.
"In this world there are 10 sorts of people - those that understand binary and those that don't."

16:0872604What I find annoying is BarryW's arrogant condescending attitude that the Trade Union Members are so poorly educated and unintelligent enough to place an X in the box and make a reasoned choice or decision as to whom to elect or vote for tp be the next leader of the labour party.
BarryW also makes the mistake of assuming that all Trade Unionists are Labour supporters when clearly some are not but being a democratic body they are still allowed to cast their vote

18:2972623this all leaves me more confused than ever, the blue press have announced many times recently how the future cuts are an attack on middle britain, now today we have the ed the head red pronouncing how he sympathises with that embattled group and will do all he can to help them.
all we need now is for dave at the blue conference extolling "comrades, please join hands and together we will sing the "red flag".

22:0972669HOWARD;
How are you bruv????? I quite like that Ben Bradshaw seemed quite good today at the labour conference.
The leader)(labour)for the welsh assembley seemed to come across well.
I think baz's lot will have enough to think about on how to keep the Lib Dems from dropping clangers, and destroying the cosy cobbled together govt.

04:3872674I don't think that Camerons a bad chap but he has been forced into an unholy alliance with the Libdems that WILL result in his and the Tory parties departure from govt maybe sooner rather than later. The signs of the libdem cracks are appearing not only the rank and file membership by their exiting the party but by senior figures that are airing their disquiet.

18:3872748an interesting side issue with the leadership election is that 10% of votes were spoiled.
one of the questions asked was whether the voter was a labour supporter, many left this part blank, disqualifying their vote.
