The group were overheard stating that they were going to 'set fire to Smokey'. The English Heritage placed barrier preventing access to that section of the moats has been ripped up and all the 'No Entry' signs have gone.

He probably wouldn't have to shoot the vandals, they'd run a mile when they see him dressed as you describe.
Maybe some hardy volunteers up there, with camera at the ready. Name and shame them and shoot them - with a camera of course.

Perhaps we should send a PCSO up there to do some community liaison (hearts & minds work). If that doesn't work he can always ask them if they wouldn't mind terribly stopping what they are doing; if all else fails he can demand their names and addresses. While he is doing that, he can call the real coppers who should arrive within a week.

Sounds like a great plan Peter.
Poor unloved Detached. It needs metal plates re-fixing to stop this sort of thing, but still allow access for EH and other keyholders. It's in awful condition in there but not beyond redemption yet. Kids have been wrecking the place for years sadly, even smashing to pieces an internal drawbridge.
Yes I do know the exact circumstances of who overheard, what was said and timings, but as it's a public forum I wouldn't want to say any more.
Lurking about with cameras is a nice idea in principle, but at the end of the day we've all got day jobs and the chances of catching someone is re-moat (pardon the pun).

Brian all the time im in Aycliffe ive never seen a pcso , as we all know the real police are over stretched sadly due to cut backs but they do try their best and are frustrated as we are .
