the lights are on near the top every now and again, meanwhile the car park nearby looks as if it is on its last legs.

When the owner agrees to sell [i.e Burlington House] it by private treaty or is forced by compulsory purchase order. Simple.

the worrying thing is that some of our thirsty friends sleep at night in the car park, would be awful if it collapsed with some inside.

I believe that ANY building owner should pay full business rates or council tax on an empty place after a period of a maximum two months except in the case of a death which might take a longer to sort out, just think how much has been lost with the old Sainsbury shop.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

The buildings that were bought as part of and for the DTIZ (Bus station, Britanni pub, the old MFI etc.) were bought with SEEDA money not DDC's.
My understanding on BH is that it is uninhabitable and that is the reason why they have the same status as a demolished building.
It must be wrong though that they are receiving money (anyone know how much ?) and not paying any business rates - which was the point of Peter's petition.

Kinda ruins the argument if DDC wasting council tax payers money to hold the land for future development.....
http://www.dover.gov.uk/business__regeneration/regeneration/dover_town_investment_zone.aspx
"The allocation of £10m of grant funding from SEEDA and English Partnerships has enabled the Council to purchase a number of key properties within and adjacent to the site, including the former Stagecoach Depot and the Charrington's site at the rear of Castle Street and undertake a number of pre-scheme demolition works. The Stagecoach Depot has been demolished and the vacant former Britannia Public House, 42 Townwall Street and JG's Amusement Arcade are also to shortly be demolished."

wait until david sees this he will start another thread on how great ddc is when he realises his council tax has not been spent unwisely.
i can see it now the council leader being touted for number 10 and the chairman to buck house.

Chances are that the so called 'consultancy spend' that the Dover Express is obsessed with is also covered within this SEEDA money.....
