EU referendum bill: MPs back in/out poll by 304-0
Tory benches packed after party imposed a three-line whip to support measure
The House of Commons voted overwhelmingly today for a Bill to hold a referendum in
2017 on whether Britain should remain a member of the European Union.
MPs voted by 304 to nil to give a second reading to the EU (Referendum) Bill introduced by
Conservative MP James Wharton. He brought in a Private Member's Bill to entrench in law
David Cameron's pledge of an in/out referendum after the Liberal Democrats refused to
support government legislation.
Tory MPs, including Mr Cameron and George Osborne, turned up in force in a show of unity
over the measure. Most Labour and Lib Dem MPs stayed away, and their parties abstained in
the vote. But several Labour Eurosceptics delighted the Tories by speaking in support of a referendum.

it means nothing david, exacpt that 304 mp's voted for it to come about.
and besides,a 4 year wait apathy will set in etc.
so why not bring it forward to 2014.
and lets bide by the result whether its in or out.

Boris Johnson gaffe: Why do women go to university? To find men to marry...
London mayor accused of sexism for comment made alongside Malaysian prime minister
For a man known to have a wandering eye - both for the opposite sex and the top job in politics -
it was perhaps an inadvisable thing to say.
But that doesn't stop Boris Johnson.
The London Mayor today came under attack for suggesting that women only go to university
to find a man to marry.
Mr Johnson was answering questions at the launch of the Islamic Economic Forum alongside
the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Asked about boosting female education in the Muslim world, Mr Razak told reporters:
"Before coming here, my officials have told me that the latest university intake in Malaysia,
a Muslim country, 68 per cent will be women entering our universities."
Mr Johnson, who is known to have had two extra-marital affairs, then interjected: "They've got to find men to marry."
At the time his risqué joke did nothing more than elicit groans from the audience.

If the tories are so confident of winning the vote, why not have the vote while they are still in office

Agree totally Keith, DC is trying to be too clever and it is likely to be his undoing.

Holding it off until he loses the election is wrong
it should be done before he leaves office

not so sure keith, the reds are trying to commit suicide with less than 2 years to go and we don't yet know how many blue supporters will return to the fold from ukip.
so many imponderables, the only thing that seems certain is that we will have as weak a government 2015 onwards as we have now.

I agree Labour do shoot themselves in the foot
but with the lib dems likely to be no more after the election, and have a big job rebuilding, and getting trust of electorate.
And the tories so many u turns
its unlikely they will get outright control
its likely to be another cobbled together lot
After the UKIP leader turn coating so quick. they have already shown there colours
so many will return to the tories/labour
