David Cameron faces serious Cabinet split over over arming Syrian rebels
Conservative MPs have warned Downing Street they may oppose the Government in any Parliamentary
vote on the issue
David Cameron is facing a serious Cabinet split over his plans for Britain to take a leading role in
supplying Syrian opposition forces with arms, The Independent has learnt.
At least five Cabinet ministers are understood to have raised " serious reservations" about any significant
move by the Government to increase Britain's involvement in the conflict.
Their concerns have been echoed by a growing number of Conservative MPs who have warned Downing
Street they may rebel against the Government in any Parliamentary vote on the issue.
Cabinet sources admit it could take 18 months of arming rebels to force the Syrian regime to the
negotiating table - a bleak assessment which some fear may cause Britain to be sucked into a long
military commitment with a highly uncertain outcome.

I agree Howard, we should be committing our resources to helping with the human tragedy which is still unfolding there, and ensuring neighbours such as Jordan and Lebanon are not further destabilised by what is going on in Syria.

David Cameron to reinforce importance of Britain's EU membership
PM to join forces with Kenneth Clarke prior to G8 summit to argue EU membership guarantees
Britain a seat at the 'top table'

when outlining his speech. Photograph: Pa Wire/PA
David Cameron will risk provoking the Tory eurosceptic right on Monday when he joins forces with
the arch pro-European Kenneth Clarke to argue that British membership of the EU remains a vital
national interest.
In a speech explaining Britain's standing in the world a week before he hosts the G8 summit in
Northern Ireland, the prime minister will say that membership of the EU is crucial in guaranteeing
Britain a seat at the "top table".
Cameron's staunch defence of Britain's EU membership, a month after Michael Gove and Philip
Hammond said they would vote to leave now, will be reinforced by Clarke who will warn that Britain
will be "reduced to watching from the sidelines" if it leaves the EU.

got to hand it to flash, he is standing up for what he believes on this issue, though i don't agree about the "top table" bit. these summits with other european leaders are meaningless as all the decisions are made by the commissioners.

I don't agree Howard. He's standing up for what his focus groups say he should stand up for. He reminds me of Groucho Marx: 'Gentlemen, those are my principles- if you don't like them, I have others'.

what about the "top table" peter, does it exist just for photo calls or does it make important decisions?

The top table argument doesn't hold water. Britain can be at the top table in our own right, or we can have a share in a claim to a seat at the top table held by the EU. The EU is fundamentally undemocratic and does not deserve its seat.

Top Table is merely a metaphor for the G7, G8, G11, G20, or whatever. Means little but our economy is still big and important enough to be able to hold our own without being subsumed into Europe.

#194, I disagree. As part of a future federalist EU we have our own voice but can only say what we are told to say.

Flashman said his would be the greenest government ever............
David Cameron hints at further cuts to green energy subsidies
David Cameron has hinted he would like to cut green subsidies that force up energy bills, after questioning
the "sanity" of onshore wind farms.
David Cameron said we should "look very carefully" at green subsidies
The Prime Minister said he would "think very carefully" about green subsidies for energy sources such as
wind farms and solar panels, as they "end up on consumer bills".
He admitted that fuel bills are being driven up by green subsidies, even though the Department of Energy
and Climate Change largely blames the rising cost of gas for soaring energy costs.
The Coalition's official policy is to subsidise wind farms, solar panels and other renewable energy to help
Britain meet its targets on reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The UK has signed up to green targets to
tackle climate change.
However, Mr Cameron has come under fire from environmentalists for appearing to row back on promises
to be the "greenest government ever".

Hopes of G8 tax avoidance breakthrough fading fast as Bermuda refuses to sign up to new rules
An international deal to crack down on secretive tax havens is in jeopardy after the British Crown
Territory of Bermuda refused to sign up to new transparency rules.
Tax avoidance had been placed top of the agenda for the G8 summit of world leaders meeting next
week in Northern Ireland, and David Cameron has called Britain's 10 overseas territories and crown
dependencies to talks on the topic in London this Saturday.
The Prime Minister had hoped to persuade them to agree to a new convention drafted by the
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to give momentum to his drive
for transparency. But the plan is now in doubt.
