#77, Brave Howard indeed, above and beyond the call of duty

I feel anotherr plaque coming on not to mention the next Dover Mayor
Yes Watty, the cruise terminal is renowned for its on site parking and Dover has the facilities for any overspill too

Once again the AIDA Luna in today...and very welcome. Cruise calls comng thick and fast as was said earlier. Poor weather seems to be greeting the visitors lately but better days ahead. It managed to get into Port this time. You might remember last time it had to abort entry at the last moment in the stormy conditions.
Will recycle picture from the earlier post...yes here we are...the smiling face

The good steady flow of cruise ships continues today but once again sadly all the passengers are greeted by dismal weather. Not giants this time..more minnows, in the shpe of The Braemer and The Albatross. These ones have a dated look to them. The Braemer is pictured earlier in this thread, by John Mavin himself..this is the sister ship to The Balmoral, she of the recent Titanic excursion.

Are these the ships bringing German visitors to the Museum weekend?

Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

I would guess the Braemar is a turn-around and the Albert Ross is a Port of Call ?
It would be great if the Transport Museum were to have lots of these cruise passengers up there to see the World War 11 show there today and tomorrow. Certainly help with their funds.

the tour bus was doing brisk business earlier, not sure if it does the transport museum.
There did seem to be quite a few tourists in Dover today , shame they where met by such miserable weather and , at times , wall to wall drunks and beggers , either sitting in doorways taking up the benches up the high street and the market square .

exactly as you described sarah with the addition of 3 or 4 sad looking market stalls.
just to make a point about our fountain, the first thing visitors do when they arrive in town is to take pictures of themselves in front of it.

There shouldn't be "sad" market stalls, although the weather yesterday would have made anyone sad.
I have written a paper on how to have a successful street market in Dover and sent it to the Mary Portas (Dover) Town Team some time ago. I have also put forward the name of some one who has seven years experience of running a successful market and a market stall and knows what to do to make it work.
I have also written to DDC advising them that Dover Chamber of Commerce no longer want or have any interest in the market - and still nothing moves.
Your point about the fountain is a very valid and important one Howard. The fountan is a feature of the Market Square and no amount of spurting water will make up for it.
I understand that the spouts and pipework are expensive to replace and it makes life awkward if events are in the market square, so when some one buggers it up in any way, that's the end of it.
My personal view is that it should stay and if necessary, have funding in place to repair or refurbish it, if and when necessary. Where that funding should come from, I have no idea - perhaps the People's Port or DHB's Community Chest ?
The bus was going to the Transport Museum's Military week-end - from the Market Square and on the hour, starting at 11.00 till 4pm.

did you get any replies to your proposals roger?

Yes, you're right there Roger, the Braemar was a TA and the Albatros was a PoC. The Albatros was mostly Germans. I hear that organised coaches left for London, Canterbury and Rye but there were a lot of tourists who ventured into Town, pity the weather was so atrocious. Hopefully some of them ventured up to the Transport Museum especially as there was a bus available
Yes, agree Howard, it seems that the first thing tourists do when they arrive in Dover town is take a photo of one another at the fountain with the castle as a backdrop. The fountain must stay operating in Dover, I perish the thought of getting rid of it under any circumstances whatsoever. It is our best asset in the town centre.
Whilst back in Folkestone again this week I noted their market was thriving not to mention their flowers

No I didn't Howard; I seem to have the same relationship with the Town Team as I did with WCCTA.
I have been told that because I don't have a business in Dover and because I am a District Councillor that I am not wanted. Anything I send them - the Tourism Strategy, the Plan of Action for Dover Town and the paper on how to have a successful market in Dover, will all be ignored - I didn't even receive an acknowledgement, so that's it really.
Keep it to yourself though.
I fear Colette, that the fountain, as important, attractive and valued by many people - residents and tourists alike, it is doomed; whatever it is replaced by, will not be the draw that the fountain is.
I'm sure that although many businesses around the Market Square and Cannon Street might not realise it, they owe part of their business to the fountain, especially in the summer months.

i don't quite see the logic here, if we follow through and take a scenario of stewart rose or alan sugar retiring and moving here would people then say you are not welcome to give us advice as you do not have a current business?
a look around the town suggests that input from any experienced individual would be met with welcoming arms.
