enthralling stuff tonight with both matches all square at half time.
missed yesterday's matches but reports said that there were a couple of awful refereeing decisions which surprised me, up until now i have been impressed by the officiating.
two days to go before our big game and walcott is doubtful for us and schevchenko for ukraine.

Well the Irish team are flexing their muscles and limbering up as I write. Its the eleventh hour...its do or die...its now or never... and its the last chance saloon..last chance to salvage something. Sadly to my multi embarassment they are the Eddie the Eagle of this current competition. They are clearly the worst participants and sad to say they looked like no hopers from the start.
But can they rally for one last push, one last win. What they mustn't do is let the Italians score in the first three minutes...it will be interesting to watch if nothing else..just to see how they perform, bad or good. They cant win through to anything as they are already on the long flight home, but can surely give it a last mighty go.

wouldn't take it too personally paul, the losing world cup finalists from 2010 failed to qualify too.

Ireland did a better job of things last night and at least they werent humiliated. They put up a more robust show but alas still lost 2-0 to Italy.
1-0 would have been a more just score but there is no justice. " We were played off the park in this tournament" said one of their players on the radio this morning. Dunne I think it was.He went on to say it was a success for them just to be there. Thats the wrong way to look at it, but I see where he is coming from. However it is now on record as the worst ever performance from any national team at these championships. Worst ever. No points and more goals against them than anyone ever.
So Ireland go home...
will ENGLAND follow??
tonight they are up against it in the shape of a frenzied Ukraine who will do all they can to stay in the event in front of a rabid crowd of enthusiastic supporters. Tune in tonight....
This is one of the best football tournaments ever...according to the nice man on the radio 4.

half time and we are still on course, not playing their best but looking well drilled and disciplined.
you can feel the tension, hopefully they will relax more in the second half.
the pressure is on the home side now.

we can now rejoice as our team have exceeded expectations and have reached the quarter finals of the tournament.
another road closure is assured for sunday when our intrepid chaps play italy in kiev.
great all round performance but steven gerrard has to be singled out, showed the sort of fight he normally reserves for merseyside night clubs.

lol! yes as Brucie would say.."Good Game Good Game!!"
When you consider that the pundits wrote Ukraine off beforehand, they put up a very spirited fight..and dare one mention that the ball was over the line denying the Ukrainians a certain goal. It actually was a goal but despite appeals from Ukraine the officials didnt spot it.. Their manager was incandescent..
But yes England were disciplined at the back and basically relied on the break..this looks to have been the strategy. Another solid performance though but again getting the rub of the green. Old adversaries Sweden gave France a bit of a thumping...2 - 0 in the other match.

Have to agree on the ball being over the line Paul, the extra "linesman" is placed near the goal purely to see that sort of incident and he failed miserably. I take my hat off to Roy Hodgson we have done far better than I ever imagined, Italy and Ballotelli on Sunday night next up, that could be a lively encounter.

England has been 'robbed' in a similar way before, it's swings and roundabouts.
OMG! I posted on a football thread....I must go and lie down.

let's not forget that a player was offside in the build up to the "ghost" goal, so justice was done, but goal line technology has to be brought in soon.
the italians were written off before the tournament, that is when they are most dangerous.
