following on from previous post...but
Dont stare at this one too long..you'll get double vision..
Not one of my finest pix but you get the drift. This is Castle St in the rain and looking good in glorious colour. These lights if I remember rightly blew down in a storm and were ruined. I remember I supplied Graham Tutthill with a picture of them because of the incident, no one else had one. It wasnt this shot needless to say..the other buried in archives somewhere.
It looks like we may be losing the display in Castle St by the sound of it.
PaulB.............I am not talking about the constant tryers...I am talking about the Town Council....who should have this in the bag......
Christmas comes around every year.............and every year we have the same saga......................

How much shall we put you down for Charlie?
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
JHG....You are a Town Councellor..........and as such, you should refrain from sarcastic comments...........
Your job is to amongst many things to make this town attractive, especially during the Christmas period...........I personally think Dover Town Council is shocking...........but you will know who has the big money in the town....and they should be given the opportunity to help make this Town attractive....
Many individuals give a great deal to the Town, but the Big Boys, who take everything out of the Town should contribute and it is up to Dover Town Council to show a bit of flair and savvy, to get things done................

rather unfair mr norman, john works tirelessly for the town in his various roles.
many of them are voluntary including his town council role.
the big money people locally are the ferry companies and the harbour board and they all seem cash strapped.

Charlie, I did not read it as a sarcastic remark, you were the one to mention sponsors.
I do not think I have read a positive post from Charlie since he joined which is a shame.

Charlie I didnt mean to post it sarcastically.I have with my Cllr friends put in many hours and the problem is that the lights put up last year were sub standard. In fact they were indoor lights and brackets which mean the whole lot need replacing. We have 2 problems one financial and the other is time, most specialist christmas light installers are already gearing up to put them up.
Cost the Town Council cannot afford to do this work in one year,we all work with budgets and they were set nearly a year ago because the Town Council budgets have to be in by December, and we didnt know of the problems then. The Town Council work with many outside companies, and it is unlikely any of the ferry companies or DHB would ever support this event, why should they!
As Cllr Jan Tranter said it is unfortunate that this problem has been spotted so late,so we will sort the lights problem out after Christmas away from time every Town wants Christmas Lights up,we ask that this year we realise the problem and we will get it sorted next year.
There was a discussion at one stage to abandon the lights altogether this year, but all Cllrs across Party wanted something rather than nothing.
Hope that explains the reason why.

Charlie if you think the town council is doing a poor job, put yourself up for election next time. If you get elected you will find out what a thankless task being a councillor is. Please don't knock the hard working ones like John Goodwin.

I try to stay out of this kind of posting, but would just like to point this one out,as a x town cllr, the Dover Town council is a well off council with avery good bank account, and yes they do hand out funding to lots of groups in Dover, and if it was not for the town council alot of groups would find it hard to keep going, but I still think that they could still find funding for new Christmas lights, they have done it before.
And I also think that local business,s are not that well off even the big ones, and asking shops in the town to help is a no,no, with all the rates, business taxs etc and toped with poor trade,as a town we are lucky they are still there.
Christmas is one of the few times in the year that they might make afew bob to help keep them going, but if the Town Council does not go ahead with Christmas lights ,familys will go to towns where there are some ie= Canterbury and do their Christmas shoping, this is trade that the shops in Dover must have to help them in the following year.

Interesting what inference can be drawn from reading messages. I didn't see anything wrong with Charlie's suggestion that DHB be asked to sponsor the lights nor do I see anything wrong with asking any of the organisations that do so well out of the town to contribute something.
Maybe they have all been asked and given good reasons for declining but it would be good to know that so that we can draw a line under this side of the debate or, perhaps, pursue it.

Mark, I think you have got the wrong end of the stick.
Nobody has suggested that Charlie was wrong suggesting sponsoship, it was his suggestion that John was being sarcastic by asking if Charlie would be a sponsor, we were only saying we did not think John was being sarcastic that is all.

that is my reading jan, i sensed a little frustration from john who seems to work about 25 hours a day in his real job, both council posts and being a greeter, but not sarcasm as such.
I didnt read JHG post as sarcastic , he was responding to a comment asking about getting sponsorship by asking the poster if he would be a sponsor .

So, do any of the commercial organisations linked to the town contribute towards the cost of the Christmas lights?
If not, does anyone know if they have been approached?
