Howard
A bit spooky but last night I dreamt I was walking through the snow on Folkestone Road which was brightly lit up with Christmas decorations.Apparently the snow had come early to Dover and was on the national news.
Note to self..do not attend any more real ale festivals during the daytime.

Town clerk Allison Burton told the Express: "When the contractors went into liquidation we looked to get another electricians in. stop wasting peoples money use your own electricians or DDCs for god sake woman dose everything have to go to contractors. Any excuses not to spend any money in this town get rid of that big screen and save us some money.

Dover Town Council do not have thier own electricians Alan, and because of the C**k up done previously these lights and fittings are of sub standard. Some of the lights were held up by TV ariel wire.
The committee is working hard on this problem, and although we have made a good start the cost is enormous because they were not outside fittings, they fell down and those that didnt probably would this year.90% of all fittings were sub standard. We will have Christmas lights, and half the problem was that the previous lights and fittings were not fit for purpose.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

Good luck, John. Despite being substandard the lights have looked better each year and hopefully this improving trend can be continued.
Does anyone else remember Disney offering their Christmas lights to Dover after they finished with them in London? The council turned the offer down but I can't remember why.

Mark, the last thing we want is more Mickey Mouse lights or contractors. That is surely the route of this current problem?!

surely if the wiring was only suitable for internal use there was danger to the public, the weather is pretty harsh during december and january.
furthermore damaged brackets could have meant some of the lights falling on the public at any time.

Yes that is correct, that is why the survey is being done,I remember some lights falling down in Ladywell when I was walking past, that is why we are starting afresh with approved contractors,I will not say which Cllr did the previous contracting but he is no longer a Cllr,he failed to turn up at meetings so I am told.
The Town Clerk although new is like a new broom and is leading the new works as yet we do not know how much this new work will cost, but it will be a lot,but we will have Christmas lights, they may not be as good or as extensive as we hoped, but it will mean budgeting for the lights again in future.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
This is a genuine question , did no one inspect or check the work when it was finished , or during the installation ?

i was thinking the same thing,
surely if cllr lloyd got the lights then someone from the concil would have checked them,
this is the sort of thing that should not hapopen
again its a waste of public money

Quite right Keith , if a contract was awarded for X ammount to a company then surely someone would check that the job was done to an acceptable standard before the contract was signed off and paid ? If it was inspected and this was missed , will the person who signed it off be asked to explain thier actions ? If it wasnt inspected and paid anyway , the council needs to be held to account for the faliure to do so.
