To do what is really needed of course to get the UK economy into good shape and also to handbag the Europeans into seeing sense.

BarryW.
You might want her back and that is no surprise but "we" certainly don't want her back.
We already have the male version and look where that is getting us.
You are happy, but millions are certainly not happy, a contentious statement don't you think Barry?

'we' GaryC.... that may speak for some but certainly not all.
Who on earth are you talking about though, 'already have the male version' - certainly not?
What we need is the strength, conviction and determination she had to do what is right for the majority and not to be blown around to appease the feint hearted.
We face some of the greatest challenges our economy has ever faced but right now political considerations are taking precedence over what need to be done for the economy to recover and all our futures depend on that.

Certainly yes.
DC, might not be as bombastic, stubborn or dis-companionate as her but he is as uncaring.
You really don't want me to start naming all the cuts that have been imposed on the "feint hearted" do you?
Done that already and you take no notice.

GaryC - cuts that are essential because of the irresponsible fiscal policy adopted over 13 years of Labour misrule and a failure to make those cuts will bring about a far worse outcome than making them - for everyone and that includes you As I have said elsewhere, these 'cuts' need to be deeper and faster.
If Cameron cared as much as Mrs T and had half of her compassion we would see him and Osborne being far more resolute about taking the economic measures to put our economy right and to worry less about image and the polls. Just because the medicine is nasty it does not mean it should not be administered to the patient.
Reg - once again you post with no regard to facts and reality. I have always been consistent, supportive overall but critical where I feel it is appropriate.

Silly me, we are now patients are we? I certainly am sick of this bull.
Hurray! Hurray!
Unemployment in the United Kingdom has fallen by 51,000 in the three months to April, according to newly released statistics.
Are but wait!
The number of dole claimants rose in the same period, with a total of 8,100 more people claiming jobseeker's allowance in May.
And!
Almost eight million people are now in a part-time job, while those working part-time because they cannot find full-time work increased by 25,000 to 1.4 million.
And!
The number of people unemployed for more than a year increased by 85,000 to 886,000, while those unemployed for more than two years rose by 29,000 to 434,000.
And!
UK youth unemployment runs at 1.01 million and 9.23 million so-called economically-inactive people in the three months to April, a fall of 69,000, mainly due to a reduction in the number of students.
Economically-inactive people?
IPPR chief economist Tony Dolphin said: "Long-term unemployment is the hidden crisis of the slowest ever economic recovery in the UK."

these figures that come out are a mystery to me, how can unemployment be down when signing on goes up?
over the years governments tinker with the presentation of figures in order to make themselves look good.
the poor devils looking for a job are just pawns to be used for statistical purposes.

Its simple, Howard -
We are actually getting more honest figures. There have been many fit for work being moved off jobseekers to massage the unemployment figures down. People are now being shifted back. It does not mean there are necessarily more unemployed, it is just a matter of which statistics they appear on. I did blog about these changes a while back.
GaryC - at the end of the day the best hope for anyone losing their job is a more healthy economy and what needs to be done has to be done. It has to get worse in some respects to get better.

Keith - you speak as if there is a choice in the matter. There is not. The biggest cause of unemployment, ultimately, is an excessively large and expensive inefficient public sector.
There is an interesting tale in this chart taken from official statistics and published in the Speccy.....
