I am sorry to say that the DDC planning committee may well get a list of planning applications but when it comes to their meetings the officers only give them four or five from the whole area to consider. Each of these comes with a ream of notes from the officers, so much so that I expect most of the councillors have enough to do reading them without looking up the ones that didn't make the agenda.
One example; a planning application went through for a block of nine flats on a small space in Aycliffe, DTC objected, as did some local residents and it was rejected. The applicant appealed and lost on the basis of a poor quality of life for prospective residents. A new plan was later submitted to squeeze a block of seven flats and a pair of semi-detatched houses on the same sight. DTC once again objected and yet DDC officers approved it without submitting it to the committee of councillors, despite the previous history of the site.
DDC does lack vision. The developers of the DTIZ failed to deliver on previous plans and yet DDC stuck with them until we now get offered 15 shops, a massive car-park and a wall to further disengage the town from the seafront. Does anyone have any difficulty in finding 15 empty shops in the town?
There are other developers out there offering far more imaginative proposals for Dover, and other towns, and yet DDC has stuck with the one that only promises them an increase in parking revenue.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

It seems that I am not alone in thinking that the Planning dept at D,D,C, should be replaced,I think we could do better if this Dept was handed over to the KCC.

the more i hear about the planning department the more i agree with vic.
what i cannot understand is when a town or parish council refuses an application the district council can ride rough shod over the decision.
the point made about the reams of paper presented to councillors is a valid one as i know from personal experience.

There are depts at the D,D,C that are very helpfull and understanding and do a good job,but the planning dept is not one of them.

I am sure they can Sue, but how many get talked out of it by the officers or their party whips?

Yes you can have your 3mins like we have done in the pass, but it is only a PR thing and the D,D,C, council will still go ahead with what it wants to.

I'd imagine 15 units built with proper trade access rather than smaller shops bodged into larger ones would be more appealing than some of the 'High Street' sites ?
Been nice knowing you :)

Another of the things I do not like about the proposal is the publicity about "restoring the historic streets". All they have done is name the lanes in the carpark, while demolishing the last few houses in what is left of one of the historic streets.

Just read that they have Travelodge lined up - surely that is a major big step if the hotel is built, the masts can be moved and Burlington House can come down !!!

I find it very sad that the whole obsession has become about Burlington House rather than about what this development as a whole means for the town. A massive carpark, a wall to discourage visitors and a green area that could be a market but will be used for extra parking. The fifteen shops are not on a bus route which means those occupied will be used by out of town shoppers (possibly) causing more traffic on our busiest road. Of course the plans do show some lovely trees in amongst the parking but does anyone really believe any of them will survive to maturity? Even what is left of St. James Street will be reduced to a route through the carpark.

Sadly the derelict buildings (and dangerous Burlington House) are the things that people see and associate with the town, anything that goes there and make the town more appealing can only be good?

people see burlington house, the disused car park and snoops as symbols of the town's decline.
once they are gone most are not too bothered what the replacements will be.
I feel it would be a great pity if the remaining houses in St James Street would be demolished.......
Many people feel that nice houses and a community be developed here....In fact, if they got the old maps out....they could revive the lanes and the houses thereof.....
Burlington House.....should just be pulled down, if "They" wanted to, it could be done

....Brook House...etc...they just went overnight....
Move the masts and bring it down.....The difference in the lighting, space etc would be immense......Then let the investors look at it.....it would be a different site...
I do not feel the Planning Department can take all the blame.....we need good Money and Power to come into the town...............Money and Power gets things moving.....................
