17:0679292That if we want to have textile factories back and produce our own clothes, it shouldn't bother us if there are pools of desperatly poor people each with ten children to a family in Africa and South America and India and China who want to sell to us the clothes we wear! That's all. It was inreference to your post 57. There is no law saying that we cannot re-introduce textile and other factories back to our Shores and work in them! Better than 2,5 million people signing on in Britain!
We have our own people in need of an economic solution to their problems.

17:1379295Markets Alexander - markets. Command economies do not work and you cannot just create jobs by deciding we need 'textiles' or whatever. The demand is filled by the market and work where the market says. You cannot buck the market - it is mad to try to do so and the road to a wrecked economy.

17:1779296Barry, we have a wrecked economy! And about 3 million people unemployed and seeking work.
The campaign is under way! Long-gone spheres of production will return to Dover and Kent! Many people will be happy to be able to work even part-time, and have more money to spend!
Kent Invicta!

17:1979299Today I managed to get another painting and decorating job secured, it's only a few days work, but might lead to more work. Many people want to work, and many people will want to vote for Council candidates who are sincerely there for the local people's benefit and prosperity!

17:2079300Dream on Alexander. utter tosh.
The economy is slowly recovering and this will accellerate as the deficit is got under control and economic activity picks up - its a rocky road ahead but only private enterprise has the answer.

17:4179312Alexander all the economic indicators suggest that Barry's view of the economy is the correct one, in that there are definite signs that we are slowly starting out on the road to recovery.
The use of the state to intervene and create work has sadly proved to be a fools errand across the globe and a spectacular waste of our tax pounds. The best way in a mixed market economy and a social democracy to create long term employment opportunities is to incentivise the private sector create training opportunities and employment as they grow.

18:0879318With regard to the textile industry there is a big push on at the moment to re-introduce the use of British wool in suit making etc.So there is some truth in Alexanders ststement.

the use of british wool in suits is good news, but manufacturing of the suits will still take place in the sweatshops of the east.

18:5079328The wool is to be woven in the UK and the suits will be made on Saville Row.......maybe you were referring to the sweatshops of East London...

19:2079335I watched "Dispatches" on Ch. 4 last night. It highlighted sweatshops in Leicester where the workers were being paid £2.00 to £2.50 per hour. They were making garments for some of the top shops in the UK. All the workers were from the sub.continent, some legal and some illegal. The owners of the factory were also from the same place.
The place was filthy with no place for the workers to take their few breaks in a 12 hour shift. The sewing machines were also unsafe having no safety features to safeguard the workers fingers. Talk about third world country conditions, they are alive and kicking in Leicester.

saville row does not sound like a mass production area, posh barry buys his suits there.
alec
that is an age old problem all over the country, these factories get busted every so often, but the fines meted out are factored into their costings.
i know of one that arranged their work force to sign on, then paid them 75p an hour.
most of them slept 10 to a room and spoke no english, they didn't even realise they were being exploited.

19:3179339Not me Howard - never had a suit from Saville Row - my suit buying has been here in Dover where we have some very good gents outfitters - Alan Hughes for one.

20:2279355The evolveving discussion presented on this thread proves that my campaign for an honest training and employment scheme in a local textile industry and in other spheres of industry is needed.
For local people earning an honest wage, that can increase in time.

21:1779372Brian stop being an ass - there is a discernible sense of optimism in the town at the moment, it may be the football, it may the peoples port, it may be the economy stupid, but it is palpably there.
We need people to start talking it up, but at the same time not taking the pressure off the council to move ahead with the DTIZ or the NHS with the rebuild of Buckland Hospital
