I cannot believe some of the things being written here.
Do we want kids to start smoking or don't we?
If the step under discussion has been proven to reduce the appeal of cigarettes to children, then how can anyone oppose it?
Exactly.

Totally agree Andrew, I was just thinking that. When I see kids at local schools smoking just before school and even during school it really saddens me. The thing is - when I was in my teens (many years ago!) we didn't know the dangers of smoking and it was "cool" to smoke. As soon as I left school I started smoking and felt really grown up.
These days however there is no excuse, we are constantly told that smoking kills - no messing - it kills - end of. When my dad was told he must stop smoking when I was in my twenties I said I would stop too to help him. I have to admit I found it really easy to give up and I'm so glad I did now. That was 40 odd years ago and I've never regretted it.
So if these kids know the facts what makes them smoke? I agree a lot of it is in the packaging. If I am torn between two pkts of something on the shop shelf I will buy the one with the more attractive packeging, don't know why I just do.
I think hiding the cigarettes is a great step to take, well done whoever thought of that. My husband refuses to give up and I listen to him every morning coughing for ages while he "enjoys?" his first fag!!He's in his 60s now and has smoked most of his life and will not listen. More fool him I say.
I really hope that in years to come kids will realise the danger they are putting themselves in and not start this dirty habit.
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

It should perhaps be more widely known that Nick Clegg is a smoker. Put his mug on every packet, it wouldn't hurt.

andrew, not saying kids/teenagers have to smoke, hiding the fag packets behinde doors wont make much differance.and futher more you cant stop kids/teenagers from drinking alcohol or driving cars at the age of 17.the real question here is are we or goverment going to hide all thats bad for our kids/teenagers,i think not.

the act of hiding anything from youngsters just encourages them to find out what all the fuss is about.
always been the way and will not change, this is just big government bearing down on other peoples lives.

Regardless of the rights and wrongs on this issue it does highlight the hypocrisy of our conservative representatives. When in opposition tory mp Michael Penning was quoted as saying:
"the Conservatives would seek to repeal Labour's move if they win the election".
Of course he was talking about this display ban.
Well pop across to his website here
http://www.mikepenning.com/
and find if you can any evidence of his great "fight".
Not surprising really I suppose. He is:
a: a toadying tory.
b: happens to believe in that climate change nonsense and
c: a toadying tory.
All in all typical of the kind of government we have come to expect from the conservatives.
I don't care, frankly. Whatever it takes to reduce the risks of todays kids ending up like some of the poor sick people I have seen in hospital as a direct and incontravertable result of smoking is good with me. And rather than an opinion voiced by an addict I will go with the researched facts.

bern,i am not denying the facts,i have posted two yes two other things that can and have been known to be killers.
1,booze,as in vodka, whisky and such like.facts have proved this.
2,cars,dangerous in inaexperinsed hands of 17 to 25 years age group.stats have allso proved this.
so from what i can understand from what you are saying is that kills more than the other two, which is fair comment.
howard and myself allong with a few others from the the forum have seen the results from underage drinking etc.
so if you want to see fairness for keeping youngsters happy and healthy booze should kept locked up like tobbaco prducts.
teenagers [17+] should be able to pass there tests under controlled enviroment, then supervized for there first year to 18 months on the road.either that or put up there insurence to 5 grand a year.
And that has nothing to do with the smoking issue. That is separate. There is nothing to say we can't do two things at once, but there is no excuse for inaction when there is obvious tangible evidence of harm.

Brian the items you mention only kill when misused. The same applies to kitchen knives, hammers and chainsaws. Tobacco kills when you use it as intended, big difference.

Howard I know 2 people who have died of alcohol abuse in the last fortnight, one chronic, one acute. Bar the odd poisoning, I can't remember the last time I heard of someone dying of too many Big Macs.

Overeating and overimbibing can both cause health problems. In moderation they are both good for you and in the case of food vital for life, can't say the same about cigarettes.

What is the argument? As has been pointed out many times - lots of stuff can be bad for you, but cigarettes are known to kill you or at the least damage your health severely - as Peter points out, when used AS INTENDED. They are promoted at huge expense by SHAREHOLDERS for PROFIT in order to kill or damage you. I would have thought the lefties on here would have been up in arms about that. People are deliberately selling and promoting stuff that actively damages and kills people, for huge profits, with governments supporting them, and we are arguing about whether or not we should perhaps not have it sold freely at the counters where kids buy sweets??????????
