#39. Never heard Kensitas mentioned for donkey's years Peter. I smoked them in my youth until I saw the light.

Keith - it isn't just about availability, it is about the fact they they were behind the person serving you at the counter every time you bought something - that made them "normal", like product placement in movies. It's a subtle (perhaps no so subtle!) marketing ruse.

bern, just because they are there you have to buy them now do you.

No one makes you buy stuff, but if advertising didn't work they wouldn't spend so much on it, would they?! And what better advertising than to be right behind the person at the checkout? Kids see that every time they shop with mum or dad, it becomes "usual". That's the skill.

kensitas are definitely a blast from the past alec, they used to give away coupons which when accumulated could be exchanged for a whistling kettle or similar.
i think they carried on in scotland a lot longer, i remember an episode of the nesbitts when the wife was throwing an on fire duvet out of the window and saying "i nearly smoked myself to death for that".
Anyone remember Black Cats? And has anyone else here made themselves slightly bilious on Consulate or St Moritz?

How informed are the opinions being expressed here?
"Jo Butcher, of the National Children's Bureau, agreed: "It's essential that we create a culture that promotes and protects public health and tobacco legislation is a significant factor in making this happen."
Jean King, of charity Cancer Research UK, said the ban would help stop children who are attracted to brightly coloured tobacco packaging from taking up smoking but further action was still needed.
"Of course we want to see the pack branding taken away as well. This is not a normal consumer product, it kills people. We want to protect the next generation of children," she said.
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley: "We want to arrive at a place where we no longer see smoking as a normal part of life/ However, the move has upset the tobacco industry."

Andrew - it will not be possible to break through peoples addictive prejudices. Even people who have witnessed those who have had amputations and live tied to an oxygen cylinder because of smoking continue to smoke. It is an addiction that is being peddled cynically and skillfully for profit. And those on here who appear to be allergic to the word profit may be the more blinkered.

Very true Bern
Being fat

I know I should not have just eaten two buttered hot cross buns for breakfast but I have and they were lovely.

so a consumer product kills people dose it [smoking],what about the other consumer products that kill, cars, lorrys, fumes from viecules, lard, dripping, fast food etc.and oh yes i forgot crossing the road with an i-pod in your ears.and i'm sure there are loads more i havent mentiond.
Ok, let's simply allow everything. One question: does smoking allow us to get to work and go on holiday like fuel does? Are you forced to consume lard? Fast food? At least lard and fast food actually provides some energy and calories. What, exactly, does smoking contribute to your well being apart from gratifying an addiction, in the same way that skinning up does?
Jan - I am with you!!

bit of double talk there bern;
your against smoking whilst understanding other adictions.
there is no doubt smoking like many actvities howard posted on are also or can be killers.
whilst i choose not, whenever possible be in smokey environments thats my choice.
whilst im lucky enough to have packed up smoking over 25 years or more ago its not an easy habit to break.
but there are other activities just as damaging.

And? Because there are other things that are toxic we have to allow them all? I am also not sure where you get the idea that i am anti-smoking but tolerate other addictions...........there are comparable, is what am saying. No double talk - they are all addictions.

"Smoking IS baad, y'Ok." [as the counsellor on South Park might say it]
Black Cat, was Craven 'A', as I recall. [I did collect packets when young :(]
Tobacco is injurious to health, who could doubt it? It is a crutch though, or has become so over the years, and all talk of whipping it away does give some the colly-wobbles.
Bern is right though. To promote good health and allow tobacco free rein is pulling the cart both ways. Something has to give, better that that something is smoking.

There will be no Peace, no rest and no ease in life because all these things describe, if not death itself: stupor, torpor and the bliss of ignorance.
Life is struggle. The absolute best life can be is worthwhile.
To wish for a world free from agony is to wish for death.
