I have a sneaking suspicion that the screen was "given" to us in the full knowledge that the technology was nearly old hat (and thus cheap) and that it would soon be life expired.
Personally I liked it, had it been repairable we should have kept it and used local programming on it. Although as usual with these things the costs would probably have outweighed the benefits.

Ours isn't the only one to go!
Seems like the whole idea wasn't well thought out.

Not in Edinburgh, council is Lab/SNP coalition and it was installed in 2009 - remind us who was in Government then.

re #83....As the BBC installed the screen I assume TV licence payers paid for it, I do not think that is how the money should be spent but I suppose that discussion is for a separate thread.

#85 Incorrect , the Screen was put up under a Labour Government.
Not political point scoring , just a factual correction.

not sure how politics comes into the equation, logoc are/were an independent body although the screen in edinburgh was not one of theirs.

Paul W, as you have joined in were DDC having to fund the power and maintenance of the screen to a similar amount as Edinburgh which was £26,000 a year?

Jan, my initial recollection was around £30.000. Part was power & maintenance but by far the biggest cost was marshalling big events being screened & the requirements of police & fire without adding health &safety issues to meet insurance terms.
That was the financial cost without the renewal of planning permission, local resistance from residents , influential other groups & the lack of supply of spare parts because the manufacturer had ceased production.
It is amazing the number of people who said they supported its retention after the decision was taken to remove it.

Thanks Paul, I wonder how many of those with nostalgic memories ever really sat and watched it, I am not one of them the Market Square looks much better with the thing gone.

I drove past yesterday morning, looked and saw the screen had gone, it looked like it was never there at all, ever. Not too sure what I expected, I guess I thought Market Square would look somewhat empty but on reflection the Square looked very smart without it
