Ah right, I understand now Brian.
By doing something early on in life, you then earn to the right to do nothing later on and criticise those that do still volunteer, based on nothing more than a sense of "I know best"...
That's your meaning, isn't it?

No guilty conscience at all as I only stopped doing volunteer work just under two years ago due to old age.

talking of volunteers i bumped into ted smith in town this afternoon, hobbling away with his stick but still putting the rest of us to shame with the extent of his volunteer work. now that the south foreland lighthouse has closed for the winter he is devoting his energy to the transport museum. i believe they have a very interesting project at the drawing board stage.

one doesn't need to be physically fit for some tasks, office wallahs are in demand for some roles.
people can even stuff envelopes from the comfort of their own homes, especially at election times.
sorry brian i nearly forgot, i have given peter ripley your contact details and said you would be delighted to help at the european elections, i knew you wouldn't mind.

Thanks to a newsletter Roger put on here a little while ago (quite a while ago probably) I'm looking at being a befriender through the Dover District Volunteer Service.
Just have to wait for my DBS check to be done.

I don't get it. I raised the subject of the Olympic legacy and suddenly people are on their soapboxes talking about volunteering.

Certainly would be - and as the saying goes, watch this space.

I don't push tourism anymore Paul, as everytime I did, I got knocked back. In the end I decided I had enough brick-dust on my forehead and decided to brush it off and sit back.
I know what needs doing for Dover and for Tourism, but there comes a time when you have to realise that you (and your ideas) are not flavour of the month anymore and no one is going to listen.
David (L) has told me that more than once.
