No doubt in my mind it is down the various acronyms that organised the rally in Market Square, admittedly the people gathered earlier looked decent enough with their placards bearing simplistic statements and the atmosphere was relaxed. However the small far right group had announced their intention to demonstrate today back in February so any counter rally/demonstration on the same day would have thrown down the gauntlet for a punch up. My understanding and it has already been said on here is that some trade unions sponsored coaches so that rent-a-mob could be carried down here cheaply - not sure if they asked their members if it was OK.

I think it is time for the police, KCC and DDC to voice their opinion on the numerous marches and where possible ban them in the future.
If they can stop a small group of local troublemakers from gathering with existing laws or by-laws I am sure they could stop these coach loads of trouble makers if they wanted.
There should be a limit to peoples right to demonstrate when it causes so much trouble to others. I wish we used water cannon in situations like this.

Totally the fault of the anti-fascist groups. I don't agree with either sides views but fascist right wing groups have the right to demonstrate, if there had been no opposition groups in town today they would have marched to the docks and back to the pubs to inject some money into our town. Instead these so called liberals have cost our town, county and country vast sums.

Agree with what has been said above just to add that there are new powers that give the police the right to stop and search anyone they want. If they had carried out their duty then there would have been less smoke bombs, petrol bombs, fireworks and bricks flying across the town today. There was no shortage of officers but members of the public have been saying that too many stood by and watched things happen.

All those police and only 3 arrests - one each for Breach of the peace, public order offence and possession of an offensive weapon. Wonder how many will be charged.

Jan, the conversation/inquiry has already begun.
A meeting with PCC Barnes is already scheduled for Tuesday.
Other meetings will take locally at County & national level from Monday.
We are not going back to the late 80's/90's of the last decade.
The MP is a whip at the Home Office & has direct access to the necessary Ministers.

Paul, a lot of residents will think that response is too little and too late, from both yourself and Charlie.
We knew what was going to happen, your comment seems to say that all the people with the ability to do something knew it was going to happen, so why was it allowed to happen?

My understanding is that Kent Police only found about the counter demonstration recently. Everyone knew about the original protest announced last November so it is obvious that other groups would follow suit. All these extremist groups have Facebook pages open to all to read and it is standard practice for police forces to monitor them. Incidentally I don't remember Charlie saying anything before today.

Thank you Paul for the quick response.
I just wish all these protests, marches or whatever else anyone wants to call them could be stopped in future as they give the town so much undeserved negative publicity.

Captain Haddock and his sons knew about it well in advance if you read the other threads on here.
So why didn't the meeting with Ann Barnes take place last week not next week is the question residents will be asking.

Don't need to read the other thread although I have, I knew about a month ago about the plans for a counter demonstration - the question I asked is why Kent Police didn't.

Returning from London about 4 weeks ago I met a leading Labour supporter catching the 1210am train from Dover Priory. This well known source relayed to me the details of the event, the scope of local & national involvement & the expected response from the right wing equivalents. He had been part of the organising group. Peaceful I think not.

A couple of pictures here just to show those who didn't see any of the demo...the second one a crop of the top shot. All the sinister hooded figures - I dunno, its almost a return to the dark ages. The main roads in and out of the Port were shut down.. The nations trade artery severed for hours. Several bits of evidence of blood spilled fracas there above.
Will have more pictures on Monday over on the Sea News pages - all being well.
