I think he will attract the young vote at a time when all the old blue voters will be kicking the bucket .

The Labour party has been holding a post mortem on why they lost last May and it appears that the usual people insulated from the people they are supposed to represent decided that they hadn't got their message across to their core support.
Maybe they may just listen to their core support in future rather than talking down to them. Enough of them moved across to UKIP in 2010 and more so in 2015 to tip the balance on previously held marginal seats.

I was talking to an old labour diehard about why labour lost the election.
I said the party should have supported an EU referendum, the people want to have a vote.
He replied but we had a vote in 1975.
Says it all I think

We have never had a vote on either the European Community or European Union so it must be about time, even if the EU itself starts to self destruct which there are clear signs of.

The UK is one of the leading economies in the EU if not the most successful Brian although you wouldn't think it with the rise in homelessness and proliferation of food banks. The countries trying to keep us in are Germany and France who realise they will have to shell out our normal contribution towards the poorer countries if we leave.

It's the EU that's in self-destruction mode Brian.

The Reds have had their internal review as to why they lost the last election and true to form the clique that run things haven't really listened to their core voters. An unelectable leader and the unforeseen rise of the SNP I agree contributed greatly to their loss but they still don't understand day to day concerns.
They admit that they failed on benefits and immigration but only that they didn't get their message rather than the fact they were wrong.

I had to laugh out loud when I heard the pollsters' excuses for getting the last election so wrong. They came to the conclusion, after much research, that they polled more Labour voters, and fewer Tory voters, than they should have.

Margaret Beckett said it was partly their inability to overcome the huge myth that they mis-handled the economy, she also believes they had the right policies on immigration and that Ed was a brilliant leader.
The poor mis-guided little things!

I think she is right on the economy, the FT and a Bank of England Governor(can't remember which one) did both say Brown handled things as well as could be given the circumstances. Not sure about the rest of their policies.

I would not have blamed Gordon, he did what he could, Blair had lots of chances to reign the banks in but was too scared of upsetting his future employers.

Lot of history on this site about the issue Reg, when Blue Barry was a prominent poster on all things financial he would blame Gordon Brown if it was raining and the famous "Mansion House" speech about deregulation of banks was churned out almost daily. Upon investigation I found a piece where George Osborne had urged Brown to do it, will try and find the report.

Gordon's great stroke of brilliance as Chancellor was selling all our gold reserves at the bottom of the market after announcing his intention to do so, thus driving the price even lower. Sheer genius.
