As iv said its never a problem
but ilike all walks of life its about seeing everyones point of view
and not force your views on others.
This takes me back to my time in the clarendon and westbury when it was first formed, we had a vicar from the local church who we linked with, had carol services in the hall each year,
He was one of the best vicars St Martins church will have Rev Duckett
he was able to relate to Christians, non Christians, and although had strong views on religion, his view is that everyone has good in them in different ways, and you don't have to go to church to be a Christian.
Dover's loss was Bath's gain(where Rev Duckett was moved to)

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Funnily enough, I do see what Alex is getting at (I think); he is saying that whatever the law, or the rest of us, decide about gay marriage, he wants to retain the right to regard marriage as being purely between a man and a woman and doesn't want to be prosecuted for saying so in public. I think that is fair enough.
I have no problem at all with people holding religious beliefs and believing in Jehovah/Allah/Father Christmas or whatever, as long as they do not expect to be able to impose any of those beliefs on the rest of us. Unfortunately, religion doesn't have a very good record on that front does it?
Btw, gay marriage is not a big issue for me; but UKIP's opposition to it, now, at this moment, does tell you something about them as a party, as does their opposition to ALL foreign aid. If Peter or anyone else from UKIP wants to correct me about those policies, I'd be only too happy to find I was mistaken.
And while they are at it, a response to Keith's question about cllrs allowances would be most welcome!

the objection to foreign aid is probably due to it not actually reaching people who need it andrew.
most people see it as sweeteners that go straight into fat cats numbered accounts in return for uk businesses to get a foothold in the markets of the recipient countries.

Good point Howard. Also, I do agree we shouldn't be sending aid to countries like China and India who have big growing economies and who should be able to sort out their own problems.
The correct policy then (in my opinion) would be something like:
We will review all foreign aid to make damn sure it is getting to the people & countries that really need it. We will consult and be guided by the aid agencies & charities on this. This review process will be constant and ongoing and if we find evidence of corruption or misappropriation we will take action to stop it.
I would happily support that. Peter Ripley, in his recent Dover Express interview, is quoted as saying "...we should also stop all foreign aid. We need to get our own house in order first". I can't support that view. Our economy may be flat lining, and most of us have had to put up with a fall in living standards over recent years, but we still live like kings compared to millions of people around the world, and well-targeted aid can be effective in making a difference to some of those people.
Sorry to sound like a bleeding heart liberal, I'm not really, but we can't turn our backs on the rest of the world (even if some of us wish that not quite so much of the rest of the world wanted to live here!).

Like extreme welfarism, which is what we have in the uk, foreign aid has probably done more damage to the lives of the ordinary citizen in poor countries than many other methods could have done.
All it does is promote a victim culture and worse a dependency culture cutting off the blood supply to incentives for people to better themselves. It's a drug.
Ban foreign aid. We don't get any thanks for it anyway at least not from those who we are led to believe benefit from it.
It might give our politicians a nice warm glow but, of course, they're not paying for it.

Andrew, this is now about the future, when one day people might try to claim I have committed discrimination and a hate crime for writing about a weird law passed in Parliament that forces people to say and acknowledge and teach to others that marriage is not solely between man and woman, and that two people of the same gender who live together should be allowed to adopt a child.
If Parliament passes this weird proposal, rest assured people will be trying to force me through the Court and prosecution to "apologise", only, I won't. I'll just continue.
I'll carry it through to the bitter end.

In fact, if Parliament passes that weird proposal, it will have betrayed the British Constitution.
You are the one who is fighting uphill, not me.
So don't try turning the chessboard around!

Britain is by Constitution a Christian Country, no matter how some people try ramming down other people's throat that it isn't.
