Smoking gun? David Cameron dodges Lynton Crosby cigarette packaging controversy question
Tory strategist's links to cigarette giant pile pressure on PM after tobacco policy U-turn
David Cameron was mired in a deepening controversy last night over allegations that
Lynton Crosby, the Conservatives' election strategist, may have influenced the Government's policy
to help clients of his lobbying company.
The Prime Minister was accused of using "weasel words" after he and his official spokesmen
repeatedly refused to answer the question of whether he discussed plans to bring in plain
packaging for cigarettes with Mr Crosby, whose company Crosby Textor represents the tobacco
giant Philip Morris. The proposal was dropped from the Queen's Speech in May after
Mr Crosby urged ministers to focus on mainstream issues rather than unpopular causes.

David Cameron urged to restore green credentials with return to Arctic
An influential cross-party group of MPs has challenged David Cameron to return
to the Arctic, accusing his government of being dangerously complacent about oil
exploration in the region.
In a pointed reference to the Prime Minister's famous photograph with Arctic huskies in 2006,
the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) warns that his lack of decisive action to curb oil and
gas activities there risks fuelling "dangerous climate destabilisation".
The photograph, taken in Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, was part of Mr Cameron's drive
to present himself as a modern, green politician. On that trip, he pledged to lead a "new green
revolution" - a message memorably repeated four years later, when Mr Cameron announced
n May 2010 that his newly formed coalition would be "the greenest government ever".
The Prime Minister had fallen well short of his environmental pledges.

Commons to review its extensive use of zero-hours contracts
More than 150 staff at the House of Commons are employed on controversial zero hours
contracts, despite growing calls by MPs for tougher rules to prevent workers being exploited by them.
A freedom of information request revealed that 155 Commons employees are on standby without
a guaranteed minimum number of hours, including catering workers, computer staff and visitor
assistants. Labour MPs are now calling for the contracts to be scrapped and Commons
managers are to review their use.

13 years in power labour did nothing to control the rapid increase in
Parasite employment agencies exploiting workers.
The berth of zero hours comes from the evolution of agency working

I revealed my diabetes to end talk of plot that I was after top job says Theresa.......
In recent speeches she has strayed from beyond her Home Office remit to set out a
broader ideology vision fueling speculation that she has her eyes on the top job.
Over the past year her `stock`has risen among tory backbenchers but she insists
that this is not some great Machiavellian plan because there is no leadership bid
....we have a first class Prime Minister and long may he continue.
Somewhat like a Chairman of a football club repeating he has every confidence in
his manager.............

The lobbying row has given David Cameron a very tricky dilemma
As a lobbyist, I can see Lynton Crosby's attraction. But retaining him could cause the PM huge damage
David Cameron's key adviser Lynton Crosby. Photograph: Andy Hall for the Guardian
When the prime minister made his now infamous comments that lobbying was the next great scandal
waiting to happen, I doubt he thought he was talking about himself. Yet, boomerang-like, the issue
has come back and hit him between the eyes. On the boomerang are written two words: Lynton Crosby.
Lobbying is controversial for two reasons. The first concerns the actions of a number of greedy
and rather silly politicians who have been the victims of sting operations by journalists posing
as lobbyists. The second concerns the commercial interests of the PM's key adviser Crosby.
The government's panicked response to a scandal not involving any real lobbyists has been the
lobbying bill, potentially one of the worst pieces of legislation since the Dangerous Dogs Act.
It has been widely condemned. Only a tiny percentage of the so-called lobbying industry will be
covered by the bill, and in-house lobbyists are excluded.

We need to make it easier for firms to sack workers, claims Conservative chairman Grant Shapps
"There should be a way of saying to people 'thank you very much, it hasn't worked out but here's
a decent package for you to move on from this role,'" says top Tory
Companies are forced to invent "disingenuous reasons" to fire staff because employment laws are
stacked in favour of staff, the Conservative chairman has claimed.
Grant Shapps indicated a majority Tory government would make it easier for companies to
dismiss under-performing workers. Tonight, the party was accused by union chiefs of seeking to
strip all protections from employees.
