I agree with you, Keith. The default position should be for local associations to put forward preferred candidates. However, what if they put forward somebody completely unsuitable? The point being that party members (of all parties) are a tiny subset of the voting population. So there has to be a process of checks and balances.
We can see now with Truss that if left entirely to members, a party can end up in a very bad place indeed.

I think we may have to re-name this thread as I don't think 'turmoil' does it justice anymore. FWIW I find there's a gap in my hectic social calendar this coming Saturday so I could be available as a Minister (especially as no skills or previous experience are required) or SPAD providing I can take in a West End show in the evening.

Turmoil doesn't begin to do it justice. It's all absolutely mad.

" Not only have we broken key pledges that were promised to our voters, but I have had serious concerns about this government's commitment to honouring manifesto commitments, such as reducing overall migration numbers and stopping illegal migration, particularly the dangerous small boats crossings," Ms Braverman wrote.

Truss is definitely in trouble if she has to plough through the remaining dregs to find Shapps who has proved he is a hopeless waste of space.
Surely she can not last much longer, she is turning the whole country into an ineffectual laughing stock just like herself.

No need to bet on whether and how our MP voted regarding a ban on fracking, despite the 2019 manifesto, our previous MP's opposition and acknowledging it would be unlikely to find support here.

Shapps was also very vocal Against truss before being appointed !
She may feel she's a fighter , but what's happening now is she's losing the faith of her own MPs who are fearing she's moving away from the right, and her membership can't be over pleased.
More importantly the local population is also losing faith in her .
If only we had a reasonable opposition

She surely can't survive this, can she? It's over. Charles Walker summed it up perfectly. Only question is whether they can get away with another change of leader without going to the country.

So much chaos it is difficult to keep up. But clearly Jeremy Hunt is running the country now as there is no other explanation for bringing Grant Shapps back as home secretary. Wouldn't surprise me if we have rejoined the EU by the end of the week.

Makes sense for her to hang on until Oct 31 when Hunt reveals mini-budget 2.0
btw, there was a great cheer went up in 'spoons in Deal when it was announced triple lock on pensions staying. General consensus is that if we get 10% extra most of us will be able to afford an extra two weeks holiday abroad next spring.
Most already looking forward to drinking winter fuel allowance!

She's just thrown her hand in. Another leadership election beckons. Unbelievable stream of arrogance, ignorance and incompetence to be continued yet again.

Nothing would surprise me anymore. If Graham Brady said "Lancelot and set of balls no.3" I wouldn't turn a hair.

I see they've replaced the podium outside No10.

Maybe one of the never heard of them backbenchers will be brave enough to take the job. It will be the kiss of death for whoever succeeds Truss unless they have the support of the party and country.
