6 August 2016 01:01316451The original 1951 convention was initially limited to protecting European refugees from before 1 January 1951, a finite problem.
The 1967 protocol removed the time limits and applied to refugees "without any geographic limitation" and has become a sort of round robin, signed by 146 states, many of which the refugees are actually fleeing from, and most of whom take little if any notice of it.
I believe that Japan last year had about 5000 applications and accepted 17.
We now have 65.3 million people worldwide displaced from their homes by conflict and persecution ALL of whom would fulfill the criteria to be granted Asylum if they managed to get to the UK!
Fortunately few of the poor bastards have any hope of getting here but it is rank hypocrisy to pretend we would grant them all refugee status if they did.
The Convention and Protocols are no longer fit for purpose.
Surely it would be better to refuse the few rather than giving false hope to countless millions who wish to come to Europe? Why the Hell we should be giving asylum to people fleeing our new best friends the crane -hangers, God only knows.
The only solution is to reduce the 'pull' factor. 12,000 'migrants' have joined the estimated half million plus illegals living 'below the radar' in the UK. They find housing, work, medical treatment, schooling etc because at no point does anyone require them to prove their lawful residence in the UK by showing biometric identity cards.
The rest of the world uses biometrics https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Countries_applying_biometrics but apparently we don't because 'we don't want to return to having an ID card like we had in the war'!
Indeed it was this present Conservative Government, to placate the Liberals, who scrapped a plan by Labour to introduce them!
